When to close AMEX PRG?

I want to close my PRG that was opened 4/26/17 and don't care about retention offers. When exactly should I close this account? Before the 12 month mark or after the AF posts? If after it posts will AMEX refund the full amount? I just don't want any issues with AMEX as I did receive the 50k signup bonus last year but havent' used it much at all since.

I've got the same issue, I do not want to pay the AF but I don't want to lose my membership rewards. The part that concerns me is the T&C's mention that they may take back bonus if card is closed within 12 months....

Wait til it posts then call . Tell them you dont spend enough on the card to warrant the AF and you would like to close it. If they close it you wont get charged the af. Jmo

Do you want to keep earning MRs (on other cards)?   If so, I agree to let the fee post and explain as above.    If not, transfer (or otherwise use) the MR points first in case there is an issue.   You could then close before the AF posts, but it is still probably better for future relationship to do as above.

I have the same issue with my Business Gold Charge Card. Bur,  I think I've decided to take them up on their offer to upgrade to the Platinum card and get the 50000 point bonus and then pay the Annual Fee.  I'll still net 5000 points plus whatever I get with spend to get the bonus.  Then eventually transfer them to another Amex Card or Airline partner.

You need to close it after it posts but before 30 days goes by.

Re: When to close AMEX PRG?

Before I closed mine, I transferred all my MR points over to Jet Blue.

Re: When to close AMEX PRG?

The cancellation option when you call Amex is automated now.  You can cancel a card without ever speaking to a human.

If you have questions about potential clawbacks or want someone to try to talk you out of it with a retention offer, you'll have to specifically ask to speak to a representative.
