Which company should I try?

I'm so glad I've found the FICO forums!  I've learned so much over the past few weeks.

I finally was brave enough to pull my score this afternoon through Equifax.  It was 628.  Smiley Sad  I currently have no revolving credit and no car loans or mortgage.  On the simulator, it said I should obtain some revolving credit, but I'm not sure where to apply.  The VISA/MC cards seemed to elevate my score on the simulator moreso than the department store cards.  Does anyone have any advice as to which card to try first?  I'd really appreciate any thoughts or advice!

Thanks so much!  Smiley Happy

If you have no negative information then try Citi / BOA. They are one of the best cards I have seen. Good Luck and keep us posted as to how you make out with your apps.

Re: Which company should I try?

Welcome to these forums!

You could always try a local credit union, but if you don't have any CCs now, it might be better to go for one secured card first. It is very difficult to get approved for that first card if none are reporting.

Let the secured report and you'll probably see a score bump. Then go for a store card and that will help too.

I would first try with a bank or credit union that you have an established relationship with. BoA might be a good idea too.

You can always try BOA preapproval site and see if you qualify for one of their cards with out getting hit with Hard Inq. If they offer you a card then you can be sure, you'll get an offer from Citi also.

Re: Which company should I try?

Thanks so much to everyone for their speedy replies!  This site is a wealth of information!

I've gotten a few BoA preapproval mailings in the past few weeks, as I've banked with them for about 6 years.  I wasn't sure whether I should try them first or not, but now I think I'll give them a try.  Should I just use my mailing or should I got to a certain website?  Any thoughts are appreciated!  Smiley Happy

Re: Which company should I try?

If the pre-approvals have not expired, I'd try one of those. When I get pre-apps in the mail, I usually apply online. But that's just me. YMMV.
