Used correctly, SCT is a great way of shortcutting into great credit and bulletproofing your AAoA. Less than 2 years ago, my score was a measly 480
Sure, you bite the bullet with new account hell for 6 months, but the reward is a bulletproof AAoA.
SCT & Secured cards, the godsend of quick rebuilders.

I might buy that for $1 if AAoA was more than 15% of your score.
There are better ways to improve AAoA without a wallet full of garbage toy limit store cards.
Strangely enough in 2 years I've built a profile from a $1000 Capital One card to $60k+ in quality cards without a single SCT or secured card.

Of course, some people don't care about AAoA, some peole do.
I just love the fact that I added 15 credit cards since March and my AAoA didn't even flinch.
As for rebuilding, I was at a measly 480 only 2 years ago and now I'm at 780 so the store card route works as well. I probably have 70 store cards by now and only another 15-20 of what you'd call "quality cards".
To each his own, if your method works, use it!

I totally agree!! I fell for the store card toy limit version of rebuilding and I feel like I just wasted a bunch of time, money, and at the end of the day closed almost all of them anyway because I ended up just spending more to keep the cards active. I would caution anyone against falling in love with store cards.

I agree... In another 4-6 months all my Ch 13 derogs will fall off my reports and I'll be well into the 700's... probably 750's across the board.
So basically I'll be in the same FICO ballpark as you... only difference is I don't have 90 accounts.. (I probably have 70 store cards by now and only another 15-20 of what you'd call "quality cards") I have what? 11?
I also have a half dozen student loans that are 15 years old... so yeah, I'm not worried about the 15% of my FICO that is AAoA.
Man... 90 cards? No thanks! LOL

Contrary to popular belief, there's nothing wrong with toy limits. My most treasured store card is a $100 limit JCPenney card. I probably have 40 cards in the $200 range too.
As for spending money to keep them open...nah let them close, don't spend any money. As soon as I get a store card, I throw it into the sock drawer never to see the light of day again. Most of my store cards have never been used but they're still adding positively to my credit. And if they close, sounds like an opportunity to add the same tradeline again
The fact that you had those store cards in the first place is good enough. Whether or not you closed them doesn't matter...to this day I'll bet all those closed store cards are pumping up your score and credit history. The only difference about closed or open store cards is that closed store cards stop helping you 10 years after you close them. That's why i like keeping mines open as long as possible without spending money on them so they can help my credit for 15-20 years instead of 10.

Super congrats!!! At the end of the day, that's what it's all about 750's across the board is sweet!
I also agree that nobody in their right mind needs 90 cards and I don't recommend more than 20 tradelines for anybody. It's a bit of an obsession for me at this point, and I'm an exception now, not the rule.
I have to admit that I do love my 800 limit target card the very most
Lol! I am just happy to start rebuilding my credit after filing bk last year. I never had credit cards until now but these days you have to have credit to get anything.....I think you will do much better in 6 months or so after having the few cards you have. All of my cards I have received in the last 2 months except my 2 capital one cards....I received them right out of bk with low $300. Limits.....I will always keep my cap 1 cards as they were my very first credit cards....I have a handful of store cards I will use like my Lowes card, Walmart card, old navy, and a few others. So give it six months or so....If you have not applied for Capone go ahead and try...They have been great to my husband and I.
I have acquired 8 store cards this month with the SCT....my score has jumped, once 18 points and most recent 29 points when my C1 Platinum $300 CL hit. I do have a thick credit profile, but also a lot of collections, late payments, a tax lien and some CO's lol....my scores range from mid to upper 500's. The SCT worked 90% I'd say for me. I'm not sure what determines getting the pop-ups. The one I really, really wanted was VS because I shop there a lot. Can't get it to save my life.
