Why does Amex show $99 as pending gas payment?

My experience so far is that the "pending" amount depends on the card. I've used several cards at a plethora of different gas stations during my travels, and it's been consistently dependent on the card (at least, in my experience so far).

Amex always shows the $99, Chase shows $1.00 iirc, and Barclay (salliemae) shows the actual amount.

The first two is annoying and pumping gas every 3-4 days can get confusing trying to figure out how much I've spent, short of carrying around a wad of paper receipts.

Barclays (SM) is my favorite, for obvious reasons. The pending charge is for the amount spent. It's a no-brainer, so why can't they all be like that? :shrug:

In my case, it seems to be specific to the Amex / Shell combo.

When I use Amex at other gas stations, it either shows 1.00 or the full amount, just like my other cards. The same applies if I use any of my other cards at Shell. So my conclusion is that it's not necessarily Shell nor Amex but specifically when i use Amex at Shell.

When I use my Freedom it always shows up as $126.00 pending.

The first time I freaked out a little and called Customer Service lol...

They explained it to me and verified the actual amount.

Must be your stations, yall.

I typically see pre-auths from $1 to $75.

Once and ONLY once did I ever see a pre-auth for more than that. $250 at a Diesel pump in Western Kansas.

It's a Pre auth for $99.  Amex only allows 2 uses per 24 hours at gas stations, if you use the pump.

I've broken that barrier too. 16 1/2hr car ride to LV from DFW metro. Filled up 3 times on my BSP.
