I have applied and gotten approved for two Citi cards so far. Why doesn't Citi offer virtual cards like Amex and Capital One do to use immediately instead of waiting for the physical card to come in the mail? There are a few online purchases I'd like to make and would rather use it on my Rewards Plus account since the same SUB amount there has less time of 3 months instead of 6 like the DC. I find it rather annoying they don't. I could ask Citi support that question but really don't want to contact their team unless I really have to. Is it for security reasons?
they're going through some stuff right now
also, heaven forbid they added virtual cards, if you even looked at them wrong, you'd trigger a fraud alert and need to get mailed a letter to get access back to your cards
but to answer your question, they just don't need to/want to/haven't gotten around to it yet
asking their foreign support is not going to help you at all
but you could put in a call to the Citi ERU (Executive Response Unit) and just provide it as feedback to somebody from the US who might be able to float it up the chain as a suggestion.

their foreign support, is one big reason I do not want to dip my toe too far into their ecosystems. Not dealing with that.

That's completely understandable! You really have to be very patient and respectful when talking to those types on the phone - they act exactly the way the Netspend prepaid card customer service group does. Years of working in customer service jobs and talking to those Netspend/HP/Lowe's Preload support centers really helped with my Citi support calls that one day when I was having a hard time adding the card to Apple Pay.
For some reason, when I first read this thread title, I thought it said 'vertical' cards (as in Portrait Vs Landscape cards). LOL!!! ![]()

Only this guy loves verticl cards!

They do allow you to issue virtual card numbers. At least my card can. Maybe they don't allow it right after the initial application.
Citi does it only for some cards. If your card is covered, you possibly need to wait for 1-2 days after approval to get the virtual credit card.
Anyway, in the market, it is not mandatory to issue a virtual credit card, right after acceptance. Also, Citi sends the credit cards using snail mail and there is no option to request a free expedite shipment. It took almost a month to get each of my Citi credit cards, after each approval. This delay may result issues for some people that need to do large in store purchases to be able to earn SUB (the virtual credit card cannot get added to digital wallets like Apple/Samsung pay).

That's what I thought the OP meant from the title, but I think they are just talking about being given card information that can be used before the physical card arrives. As compared to you getting special numbers to use for transactions where you want some extra security.
But certainly the two could be related.

Yes that's what I meant. I wanted to buy things before the actual physical card came.
