I don't get it Platinum... do you really think a cashier cares about your business, or your beef? As if they have anything to do with accepting the card in the first place. They'll probably converse with you just to not have to deal with it...
As for the small businesses where the owner actually swipes, I'm sure they would rather lose your single business than deal with all the addional fees from Amex.
If you don't like it, don't go to the places, but making a scene "don't take Amex I walk" is just childish...
im not trying to be digusting but i have noticed that no porn sites at all accept AMEX kind of a big shocker to me.

Amex, from what I understand, made the decision years ago to not do business with any merchants in the adult industry, including pornography, adult "toy" stores, strip clubs, etc...
really thats a shock
"Brand image" I suppose...
Now I remember why I hated working in retail so much.
Anyway, chacun a son gout; it's a free country; and all that.
If someone only wants to use an AmEx, fine, whatever. No one is forcing anyone to use any particular payment method. I use my Blue Cash Preferred at regular grocery stores because I seriously * puffy heart * my 6% cash back, but my little neighborhood market with the incredible meat counter only takes MC and Visa, so they get my BofA 3-2-1. I'm a big believer in supporting local mom-and-pop businesses when I can, and they know me by name, and they tell me when they have something that I like. So I get 2% instead of 6% back. The sun continues to rise the next morning.
Presumably, if someone is bound and determined to use nothing but AmEx, whatever they wanted can be bought elsewhere.
If not, then we have a fine example of "cutting off your nose to spite your face."
No one seems to want to accept the obvious.......that it is up to the merchant to decide what form of payment he wants to take. That's his decision and you may be perturbed or insulted but if you don't like it just move on to another retailer. You as a customer aren't privy as to why a particular business takes a Visa, MC or cash only and you can't dictate his terms. That's his decision, you may not like it but he is the one paying for rent, stock and labor. It's his business, not yours. I know plenty of merchants that only deal with cash and it works for them, why should I get upset? We are way too subservient to a 1 or 2 percent 'reward'. It ain't that much on a transaction if they don't take AMEX.
Again, for those of you bring up the minute percentage difference, you're failing to see the point AND the hypocrisy. MC is the cheapest. Visa cost more than MC, and AMEX is more than VIsa... but they're all less than 1% of eachother.
If 1/2 of 1% REALLY mattered, they'd either NOT accept credit cards at all or accept MC ONLY. Doing anything otherwise is hypocritcal.

Visa and Mastercard publicly disclose the merchant interchange fees on their websites. After looking at their documents, I think that your opinion is incorrect.
Look at page 4 of the October 2011 "Visa U.S.A. Interchange Reimbursement Fees" from the Visa link (below). Depending on the type of Visa credit card and depending on the type of business, the U.S. Visa consumer credit card interchange fees range from 1.15%+$0.05 to 2.95%+$0.10 and anywhere in between.
At Mastercard's link (below), scroll about half-way down the page and click on "The MasterCard Interchange Rates and Criteria". The October 2011 U.S. MasterCard consumer credit card interchange fees are published on pages 16 to 85 and range from 0.60%+$0.00 to 3.25%+$0.10 and anywhere in between.
