Why dont we do this in America?

On a recent trip to England, I made a purchase with my credit card.  After the vendor swiped it he kept my card.  I was a bit tipsy from a few drinks so instead of getting mad I waited before acting like a Yankee.  So after the payment processed he gave me the printout to sign.  He watched me sign the printout then looked at the back of the card and handed it back to me. I said to myself..........what a weirdo!

The next day the same thing happened.  Then it happened again and then again.  I admit I am not the quikest learner but I soon realized that they were verifying my identity thru my signature. Then I thought to myself...........why dont we do that at home?

I would not mind if this was standard practice here as well.

It would definitely cut down on some of the identity theft if people took the time to check more into the situation. I have been to places plenty of times and the person didn't ask for identity. A few of my cards aren't even signed on the back, so what does that say?

I agree do try this at home!

Net is absolutely right.  According to the Visa and MC merchants handbook, that is exactly what should be done each and everytime.  Some merchants don't care and some try to act ike pollice agencies by requiring ID, which is against the rules.

then there are my favorite merchants that put up the sign next to the register "if paying w/cc a $x.00 surcharge will be added", or the everpopular "$xx.00 minimum purchase when paying w/cc"

those moby richards know they can't do that, but it still doesn't stop them.

This is not strange, most vendors do this to me if they don't know me.
