I think they decide this more so by how profitable you are as a customer rather than how many cards you have. If you erased all the profit they made (and probably then some) from other cards by redeeming a $1k bonus, I don't think they would care how many cards you have. In general, creditors don't like abusive behavior which this definitely is.
IME Amex is fairly forgiving of things like this (as compared to say charge offs) I doubt that they will close open cards over it. So "sure-fire" is, IMO, far too strong.
I'm not saying they will close anything, they just won't issue any new accounts. I also assumed that this was his only AMEX when I said "sure-fire."
If it was my only AMEX, why would I close the account with 100,000+ points?! I have other MR cards.
Anyway, I don't think AMEX will take any negative action over closing a single account after receiving the signup bonus. (If it became a regular pattern of behavior, sure).
My question though is still the same- has anyone had any experience where AMEX WOULDN'T refund the full AF within 60 days of it being billed?
You would use the points and then close the account? And to answer your question again, I have not heard of anything not getting the AF refunded within 60 days. Did you use your airline credits already as well? I don't blame you for wanting to get out of the heavy AF, but I use my AMEX too much to jeopardize it.
I'm going to apply for the 100K Plat for my wife, pay the AF and just call it good with the airline credits.

So this is a different sc32valve from the one who says in the 100K Plat thread
I plan on applying for that and the Old Blue Cash tomorrow to combine HPs and get our $1k bonus and start some MS on the OBC.

Slightly above that quote you would read that MY WIFE received the offers and has no AMEX cards. She has nothing to jeopardize with AMEX. Must be a slow day at work for you.
This says it has to be within one statement period (not 60 days) to get the whole AF refunded: http://www.doctorofcredit.com/annual-fee-refund-rules-for-each-card-issuer/
This is contrary to what the AMEX rep says (60 days). I wish I could get something in writing from them.
@elim wrote:Curious... When did you open the card?
I am curious as well. OP, if the card is new and you take the rewards, get the airline credit of $200 and then close within that same time frame, Amex may not refund the fee within 60 days.
But yes, Amex will refund in 60 days to answer your question. In my opinion, you have to be willing to compromise as well. If you received the 100k MR points when you applied, received the $200 credit etc.. Even if the annual fee isn't refunded, you still made out like a bandit and have the upper hand here.
But I suppose it is nice to have icing on the cake - annual fee refunded you know...

I was told 60 days also my Amex rep. So that doctor of credit report may not be right.
I opened the account in December 2015, spent $4,000 on various expenses in December, and have 104,000 (signup bonus + 4,000 points) "pending". The annual fee was billed December 27. I also used both the 2015 and 2016 airline fee credit and the Global Entry credit.
Yes, AMEX won't be happy if they refund my whole annual fee, but I'm willing to test them, which is why I'd like some confirmation as to how long I have to get the whole $450 refunded.

A victory, but perhaps not flawless. If that account gets reviewed by a rep with any initiative they would likely think about some AA on the remaining accounts and certainly not refund the annual fee if at all possible, for gaming the system that way. And they also may take a closer look at what exactly was in the "various" expenses mentioned.
Good execution and an admirable way of getting those rewards, but somewhat risky from a long-term "remaining an Amex customer" perspective.

OK, I assumed from the "I" that you were planning to use the OBC too. But yes, slow day at work.
