Re: Working Around AmEx Four Credit Card Limit

Yeah I got that, I just didn't know Amex have that limit because when I applied for my last Amex credit card (Cash Magnet), I honestly thought 4 is more than enough. If they announce a new credit card with enticing rewards structure, I'd probably close the Blue (the basic one) card or PC it if possible.

LOL you would think so. Collecting cards has turned into a strange but profitable hobby for me, I'm at 23 right now!

Re: Working Around AmEx Four Credit Card Limit

From my personal experience. Back when I had 4 Credit Cards, I applied for the Delta Reserve during the "relaunch" with the metal cards, I applied, went into review, they called me the next day and informed me of the 4 card limit and have me an option to close one, which I did, closed the Delta personal and approved.  Again, just my personal experience, different for everyone.
but, I wouldn't recommend closing a card prior to applying.

It does not.

Before the official 4-revolver cap there was an unofficial, emperically-derived 5 card soft cap although occasionally they would approve a 6th and rarely a 7th revolver.  There were also some people previously with 5 revolvers who automatically picked up a 6th one when the Hilton portfolio migrated from Citi to AMEX and the Citi cardholders were issued AMEX replacements.

No surprise whatsoever that you would have held 5 AMEX revolvers earlier this year, it isn't that uncommon.

With all the different flvors a 4 revolver limit can definitely feel restricting. That means 2 Biz and 2 Personal, so you have to make a hard choice on what you want the most, CB, Points or Miles. If you don't have any BIZ card your options certainly improve which means one of each. Delta(Miles), Cashback, MR, Hotel points. If you wanted to spread yourself that thin.

With my line up I had things fairly well covered until I ventured into BIZ cards, fortunately I got in while 5 was still the limit. It's just going to be a difficult choice which one to close when I want to open a new one! I love my BCP and Marriott card so i would likely ditch Delta or ED, although ED has my highest limit for Plan It on large purchases so as to not affect UT. Then again now that Gold has that feature... Smiley Indifferent
