I just got an email, text, and phone call (all within aproximately 45 seconds), alerting me to a Fraud Alert. Someone was trying to use my BCE for gas in SC.
I live in CA, and never use my BCE for gas.
5 minutes later: issue = resolved. They verified my authorized transactions, and unauthorized transactions. They are handling the ones not authorized by me.
My new card will be here in 2 days.
Full disclosure: I'm an AmEx FanBoy. Times like right now, simply reinforce that.

I work in a field that deals with this type of sitation *all* day, *every* day. So, I know there is more than 1 way to skin a cat.
- I use this card in exactly 1 place (my local supermarket), and only swipe it personally.
- It never leaves my hand/wallet.
- I live alone, so noone to grab it from my wallet w/o my knowledge, whle sleeping.
- I make sure that my cards do NOT have a RFID chip.
- Even if it did: my wallet has RFID signal blocking built in to it (yes, I'm a bit paranoid about this).
M best guess is:
Someone got into a CC processing company's records,
Or someone was able to stumble upon the CC#/Exp/Zip somehow.

AMEX is stellar like that I have them email/text me if a purchase ever goes above a certain threshold for that purpose too.
This isn't really an Amex specific bene, though am a big fan hereto
Had a similar experience with USAA few days ago, as you know OP issuers can't afford to sit on their hands
with gazillions at stake.
I always set alerts to email me for certain transactions, such as foreign, gas station, over a certain amount, and card not present.
