anyone have any experience with Citi Driver's Edge?

I searched through the forums, and I could only find one or two members who have this card. It looks like a killer deal --6% (3% after 12 months on gas, supermarkets, and pharmacies), earn $$$ for mileage put on vehicle and maintenance, points (or $$$?) for buying or leasing a car (whoops, too late, just did that last weekend) --there must be something wrong? My guess is that you need 849 on TU for them to even pick up the phone! Smiley Tongue Here's the blurb from the site:

Citi® Driver's Edge® Options Platinum Select® MasterCard®

Earn up to 6% rebates on the purchases you make at supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations for 12 months, 3% thereafter, 1% on all other purchases and $1 for every 100 miles you drive - up to $1,000 every 12 months. Redeem rebates toward the purchase or lease of any new or used vehicle, automotive maintenance or convert rebates to ThankYou® Points for gift cards, merchandise and services.

Earn Rebates for the Purchases You Make and the Miles You Drive

Reduce your vehicle-related expenses by earning rebates for the miles you drive and the purchases you make. Redeem your rebates toward the purchase or lease of any new or used vehicle or automotive service. Convert rebates to ThankYou® Points for gift cards, merchandise and services.

* Earn 6% rebates on purchases at supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations for 12 months, 3% after
* Earn $1 in Drive Rebates® for every 100 miles you drive
* Earn up to $1,000 in Driver's Edge Rebates every 12 months (enrollment required)
* Convert your rebates to ThankYou Points and redeem them for gift cards, merchandise and services through ThankYou Network
* Credit is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master. * Who's the boss --you or your credit?

Re: anyone have any experience with Citi Driver's Edge?

I've had this card for several years and have barely used it; BUT I'm looking back into it for the $.01 back for each mile driven (literally the T&C are on my laptop's 'desktop' right now Smiley Happy ) after a comment on another web-site. Apparently, there are a bunch of hoops but I am more than willing to jump through 'em to offset some of the 70k miles I've driven in the last 3 years if they really do pay (capped at $500/yr, must enroll, etc).

Fwiw, penfed gas will most likely be my next card... hopefully, I can sit on my hands for about 6 months Smiley Happy

Re: anyone have any experience with Citi Driver's Edge?

Hi Hauling,

Well, I have this card, but I really don't have a lot of experience with it. I originally got a Ford Visa card in 1994 and then somewhere along the line, it converted to Citi Driver's Edge MC.

Laugh, I wound up never buying a Ford. And have mostly used the card for its promo BTs. I do hope to PIF this year (cross-fingers) and maybe start using it towards a new vehicle. Smiley Happy I also do wonder if I'm better off converting to a different rewards product though. As long as I can keep the history and it stays a MC.

Penguin and JayToo, since you've had the card for a while but not really used it, do you remember if the rewards percentages have held stable over the years? Lots of rewards cards have really reduced their rebates, intro time period, and so forth (Discover Open Road, for instance, recently removed from my wish list.)

Re: anyone have any experience with Citi Driver's Edge?

I've only had this card for about a year and a half now, so I can't speak for the consistency of the rates, but I absolutely love this card. Regrettably, I didn't exactly take advantage of the 6% intro rate for the first year at Supermarkets, Gas stations, and Drugstores. However, I have been using the card very heavily ever since that first year intro rate expired.

Even though this is just a 3%/1% card without the intro rates, this is one of my best rewards cards. If you combine the Drive Rebates of $0.01 per mile driven with your Purchase Rebates, you are essentially doubling your rewards (assuming that you can accumulate more Drive Rebates than Purchase Rebates.) For me, I drive quite a bit so I would easily accumulate more drive rebates than purchase rebates.

Unfortunately, the rebates can only be redeemed in a 1:1 ratio, but even so doubling the purchase rebates basically makes this a 6%/2% card for me.

Starting Score: EQ 773, TU 766
Current Score (2/25/2017): EX 813, EQ 823, TU 818
Goal Score: 800

Thanks, andy, I had hoped that you'd see this thread! Even without the doubling, 3% is nothing to sneeze at, IMO, and you don't have to charge some gi-normous figure to get the full cashback, as best as I can tell.

Of course, I'm pretty convinced that I'm on Citi's fecal chart for life, so this might wind up being idle speculation on my part... Smiley Sad Guess I'll find out in April!

Now that you bring it up, I'd have to say the rewards have increased/improved over the years. At least, to the point where I'm actually considering on using it for the rewards. I know when it was a Ford Visa, it was a pain to use the rewards towards a car, but now, I believe it's a lot easier.

Not sure if their criteria for approvals has changed, but regardless, Citi allows does allow product changes. They weren't very helpful when i asked them about product change possibilities though, as they simply told me they won't know unless they actually do it, so I guess it kinda depends on the CSR you get.

Ah yes, the fact that Citi only requires you to have $25 in rebates to redeem them makes me very happy too! Heck, I've already exceeded that limit without the drive rebates : )

Re: anyone have any experience with Citi Driver's Edge?

Such a good question, htsu, especially considering Citi totally chopped the rewards on their dividend card not long after I got it. Mine was converted by Citi back in 2002 from a card I had previously (still has my photo on it from 1992!!!!! Hmmmmm, where did all that hair go ??? Smiley Very Happy ) So I do have the paperwork from back then, plus a change from 2005:

In general, I'd also say they've improved the rewards, excluding the caps on the annual amounts able to be earned. They added the 3% and the rebates for miles driven in 2005. Hmmmm, nothing else stands out... besides the dramatic increase in all of the account fees, like most big issuers Smiley Happy Oh, at 2005: rebates expire if you do not make a transaction for 12 consecutive months and must be redeemed within 5 years (I don't know if that has changed since then).
