as if my scores weren't bad enough......

My util is very high so I got a "bright" idea to try to get a higher credit limit by way of another credit card to lower the util%. My husband received a $2,000.00 limit with WAMU (0%APR until 9/08 then 9.9% thereafter and no yearly fee) and scores a minimum of 75 points below mine on all 3 agencies.  He has 3 collection accounts from credit cards alone and 2 are medical- yet i have only 1 collection account from 6 years ago. Same payment histories otherwise. I have a good standing car loan and he doesnt have a car loan at all.So, I figured -no problem this will be easy to receive a credit card and improve my score- right? WRONG!! I was turned down! Now my TU FAKO dropped 23 points from this inquiry (no access at this time to FICOs).
Dont bother telling me how stupid this idea was....I already found out the hard way- LOL.
Does anyone know why I could have been turned down? I have never heard of anyone being turned down by WAMU. When i disputed with experian....they placed a fraud alert on my report ( would this affect it anyway?) but TU was checked for WAMU. Any ideas????

They turned me down. The reason being was "Your credit file contained one or more obligations where the reported balance either currently or formerly exceeded the established credit limit or the reported high balance amount"

I called to complain and told them I haven't even got close to any of my credit limits. I don't know who's report they were looking at. They still told me it was done internally and it was still denied.

High UTL- is a red flag with WAMU

I have seen people with well over 700 scores get denied at WAMU -

WaMu does things on a 'when they feel like it basis' just like Cap1.....there arent many set guidelines. a friend of mine received a WaMu card with a 1,000 cl right after going through BK....however i was declined with scores 100pts.. higher and not nearly as many derogs...go figure.

Re: as if my scores weren't bad enough......

I agree C.D. They seem to be all over the board on who they grant credit to.

I have/had an old Providian card for 8 years. In Feb. 2007 they lowered my cl from $3,200 down to $1,320. I guess because at the time my TU PFICO score was 521, with 32, 30 day lates, 3 collections, 1 charge off and 7 federal tax liens.

Fast forward to late Sept. 2007. I cleaned up my CR's...had the 3 collections and charge off deleted, 30 day lates dropped to 24 in number, brought utils down to below 15%.

I received a pre-approval offer from them, applied for it, was approved for $6,500. It's now my highest cl cc. My scores at the time of applying(noting the fatal baddies in public records, and the 30 day lates):

TU: 676
EXP: 665
EQ: 633

My scores are much lower now, because I went app happy in October, and received 6 cc's. It wouldn't surprise me if my FICO scores were in the 610-630 range right now. Serves me right, but they came at the right time(Christmas shopping!)

Just my 2 cents worth. Smiley Happy

Re: as if my scores weren't bad enough......

I haven't recieved any response by mail from them (I applied online) but I don't think it was my high utils. As stated, my husband has higher util than I do. I assume they like him for one of two reasons....one- they randomly chose him and sent his preselected notice as if to say "we will make an exception for you" or two- they did it based on gender. Im not trying to sound sexist here...but it is odd that household bank gave him an increase twice on his credit limit when I had to pay for my increases, and they lowered his annual fee and percentage rate when they wont even talk to me about lowering mine. He has a few( i think 3 30 day) lates with them....I only had one in 5 years. Maybe I am way off......or just the most unlucky person when it comes to credit...I dont know.

You know goingnowhere you might be on to something. Everytime i ever tried to lower our interest rates or up our CL's on CC's i was always denied but my DH got 2 lower apr's and 3 CLI. What is going on here??? BTW I don't know if this  means anything but my income is higher than his and they always asked that question to me and not him.Smiley Indifferent
