The don't nessecarily auto-decline just because you are a first time applier.. I read an article where two guys tried to see how many cards they could get at once from Barclay. One got to the 5th on instant approval and one quit after 5 instant approvals. Can't remember if they had prior cards though. Depending on your CRs, you may be able to nab both.
Barclays is the first company I tried after having a Cap One and Credit One for a couple of years, which were the first two cards I got post-bankruptcy. I applied for an Apple card first and got approved for $1400. I applied for a US Air card (I didn't realize it was through Barclays when I did it) about a month later and got approved for $3500. About two months after that, I decided not to purchase the Apple product I was thinking about buying and called Barclays to see if I could move the $1400 CL over to the $3500 card and close the Apple card, which they did.
