You can just check the prequal site. They are typically golden if it says you are preapproved for a card.
Always a good idea to build a relationship. I opened checking and savings with BoA and Citi, then applied for their cards in a few months, and got approved instantly both times. My guess is the existing banking relationship helped, especially when I was a student with a thin file.
I would say wait till the end of the year, then apply for either the United Mileage Plus Explorer or the Marriott Rewards Premier card.
Co-branded cards tend to, in my experience, have lower requirements than premier bank cards like Sapphire Preferred or Freedom.
I don't buy into the relationship thing as much with Chase but it kinda does help to at least say something on recon about how much you want X card from them. I don't even have a checking account with Chase anymore and I've done just fine.
Have you tried their prequalification site? My scores are lower than yours and I got a Chase Freedom. I bank with Boa and Wells Fargo for my business.
