Nope, Citi didn't backdate me. Don't think they do it at all.
That would be nice. My Diamond Preferred says 2012 even though I have two closed cards still paying balances with year 2000 open dates.
What is your entire history with Citi? Which card(s) did you open in 1999, and what is the life history of that card an any other cards you've had with Citi?
Wells fargo does the same thing, but it doesn't backdate on the credit reports.
Its just saying "you've been a customer of ours since XXXX"
I'm guessing it is something to do with the gas card web site.
I'm not seeing any reference to "member since" on the AccountOnline where regular Citi cards are listed.
Edit: For each monthly statement, it does reference "Member since", 2000 for the closed Citi card, 2000 for the closed AT&T Universal card, and 2012 for the Diamond Preferred, so not sharing the Member Since date in those cases. It also says the member since date on each card.
I was wondering about this as well.
The reason I say that is I just got approved for a Citi backed card, and it says member since 1999 as well on my emails.
Thing is, this is my first dealing with Citi ever.
I honestly can not remember ever being a customer of theirs. i just figured it was a minor error.
It won't backdate on your reports.
And is it possible you had a store card with citi, or maybe a card that was bought by citi, or possibly were an AU on a citi card?
The reports won't backdate, and the member since date is essentially just for looks.
