data points for account closures

I only have two credit cards, so they will be used on a regular basis. But I've seen people with a mangnificent number of cards (5+) and some people have over 20. How do you keep them all active and what is the longest period of inactivity allowed before those cards are closed?

Some people assign regular charges (e.g. Netflix) to one card, another to another, so many of the cards that aren't regularly in use stay active.   Others make sure to put a small charge every few months, and others rotate their cards in and out so they all get regular use.

Others, like me, just leave things alone, and if the cards get closed for inactiivity, that's fine  (The "if I am not using them, I don't need them" school.)

I like the leave things alone approach also but I will make a purchase once every year or two if I really want to keep it open.  If they close it sooner than that then good riddance.
