debt reduction programs

What about these debt reduction programs that claim to negotiate your balances and rates with all of your ccs and put it together into one lowered monthly payment for you.  This sounds pretty good.  There must be a negative or two involved somewhere.  Does anyone know anything about these?  I've been talking to Coastal Credit Solutions, along with a couple of others and am seriously considering utilizing this option.

Re: debt reduction programs

yes, in most cases thay will slose your credit cards, negotiate a lower rate, but you don't have the creit to use anymore. you pay it down and..... that's it. The only drawback is that your credit is worst then you are right now. Better off without their help. Excersise self discipline when it comes to finances. Unless you want to go to FICO 400.

Re: debt reduction programs

That plus depeding on which os these 'As seen on TV' ads you use, you can wind up paying more in fees than you would just freezing your cards.  I've heard horro stories of exactly what Montana mentioned, debts that were not past due suddenly becoming past due...etc.  If you really need to do this, at least go to a reputable place like you local United way.  But as posted, you will lose the use of your cards.

Re: debt reduction programs

I went there about 3 years ago . I used CCCS ( atlanta ) www.cccsatl.org I was very skeptical at first, and I anticipated my bad credit getting a whole lot worse, but to my surprise it didn't get that bad. Just before entering the debt reduction plan my score was around 460 somthing, just after a year in the program it went up to 517,, then to 560... and currently I am at 674. Pretty much all of my CC accounts report as being paid on time and nothing else, but a few do say closed at grantors request , and in a debt management program, but pays as agreed. Nice to see that I could go from owing over 15K in CC's and in three years down to owing less than 4K. I have about another year and a half left and I am to be paid in full. Since I am in a much better place Financially, I might just try to pay my way out of the program faster. This helped me get back on my feet and steer my financial picture in a better direction and I am so glad I made the decision to do so. Again, I cant speak for everyone,, this is just my experience with using CCCS. I will say you do have to keep track of your transactions. and your funds distributions are made on time, mainly at first when you start the program. Once you have 6 months under your belt, it seems to run smooth as silk. I think their fees are $25.00 per month of your payment goes to them for administration fees or something .... in the bigger scheme of things,, not a big deal .

Re: debt reduction programs

Jfritz this is one of the reputble companies.  It is a non-profit organization just like the United Way.  I would reccommend anyone who actually needs CC to go to one of these types of organizations and not the 'As seen on TV' types.  Congrats on gettng your debt under control.

Re: debt reduction programs

I've been using Care One Credit since April and have had nothing but good.  They lowered rates on most of cards.  They charge a $30 a month fee but I believe it is well worth it.  I've saved more than that amount on monthly interest charges alone.

I probably could have done it without them but I was heading for trouble really fast.  I got desperate but I am finally on track again.  With my next payment I will have paid off 2 cards and will be under $8000 dollars total credit card debt.  My goal will be to pay off all of them next year.

Seems like a lot but yesterday my boss called me and made me accept a new posistion and I will be getting a decent raise so I'm very thankful for that.

Whenever you look for a debt management company make sure to check out the BBB.
