? for those who have done a product change with BOA

Hi!

I just recently had my BOA card unsecured (fully secured ) in Jan 2010.  I am wanting to do a product change.

1st I know they have to do a new app etc from reading other posts but is there a new credit check etc? hard inquiry?

2nd-what card do you all recommend to pc to?

thanks for all your help!

Unless it's changed from early 2009, I switched from a secured to Platinum Plus with just a phone call.  I had the secured for 9 months before I called though since I had heard they will upgrade anywhere from 9 months to a year normally, but sometimes longer.  I don't recall it being a new application or additional inquiries.

Here's my recommendation: DON'T DO IT! A little known thing about the BoA previously secured card is that they get tagged with an internal code "Emerging Credit" for a while. Let the unsecured dust settle for 6 months or so. Use the card a lot & PIF. Why? Because that "Emerging Credit" code might just trigger an account closure when you startmaking requests (simple as they may be). Further, they're very unlikely to do a product change for you at this stage. I don't pretend to understand the 'why's' of it, but we've seen a lot of anecdotes here lately where recently unsecured cards were closed upon contact with customer service.

Also, BoA has some minimum credit lines for some of their products. You may want to hold out for a CLI to be eligible for the product that you really want.

Once you're past BoA's twitchy nervous stage, product changes don't require a new app, or a hard INQ, in my experience.
