Most say every 2-4 months. Most card agreements I've seen usually say about 6 months of inactivity before they consider closing the card but I'd say a little more then that just to be safe.

Once every 3 months should be good.
I think it depends somewhat on the lender and your relationship with them. I haven't used my BofA card in about 2 years and haven't had any AA, CLD, etc.

my relationship is pretty short with all but my amex, so I am going to make sure to use my cards every three months for now
