BCE seems to be a harder approval than ED from what i've seen...

Im pretty sure they have the same underwriting. But don't quote me on that
I'll get back to ya on that one in January, I'll try applying for a BCE.

so if i don' travel much, it would not be much value for me?
If you don't want to redeem for travel just look at cash back cards then, but you did mention recent travel and renting a car in your original post. I'm not sure of how amex would have saved you money on a rental car. Was there some sort of discount offered?

@mongstradamus wrote:No you have to look at airline partners you can't convert to cash. If you convert to gift cards you will get an lot less than 100. Do you want a amex card just for sake of having amex card. Because BCE also wouldn't make much sense since you have sallie Mae. Maybe blue cash would be viable but you need to put an lot of spending into open 5% categories
mmm.. the blue cash.. what do you mean have to put a a lot spending into open 5% categories? don't really get that... i wouldn't assume I will put a lot spending into that card since i am interesting in Cap1 qs and citi double cash and I have fidelity to ear 2% currently.. so.. i just want a card with better reward program and have just to have an amex card.. >.<
Mongstadamus is referring to the (old) Blue Cash card. You need to spend $6,500 a year and then you get 5% back on supermarkets, gas and drugstores. If you are not planning to put much into the Amex card, then this isn't the best choice for you (although for my needs it is by far the best card!) If you don't travel, and maybe couldn't put 20 purchases a month on it, then the Everyday probably isn't great either. But it will work if you just need an Amex for car rental.
You have a nice lineup of cards there...
It depends on how much you spend on groceries and where you shop at. But I think I would app for the BCE and PC the Cash Rewards to a second BBR (assuming you don't spend more than $250 in gas per month). If nothing else you can use the occasional Amex Sync (aka cash back deals in BoA speak) to keep the card active.

oh oh my bad.. forgot to mention that the coverage of those liability. I had to pay double what I paid for the rental itself for the insurance.

I don't spend more than 250 in grocery or gas. (at least for now)
My boa cash rewards serves when fidelity amex could not be taken (it happened a lot to me actually, like at least 4 - 10 times a month) I probably would do the PC when i get the cap1 QS or citi DC..

If your referring to the collision coverage (so damage to your rental car not what happens to other people in the accident) then amex isn't the only company to look at. You can get primary coverage via the chase sapphire preferred as well as the world elite mastercards I believe. You will still need personal liability insurance as I know of no credit card that offers it, Other companies provide collision coverage after your driver's insurance policy if you have one, but the three I mentioned provide it first even if you have driver's insurance.
If you are dead set against an AF, then I think the ED card is the one for you. MR points are quite flexible and don't ever expire, Amex has a lot of ancillary features that make it nice to be a member.
The Amex back dating alone is a good enough reason to get a no AF card from them if you can. Maybe sometime down the line the of one of their other cards will appeal to you, if you decide then to get it no hit to your AAoA, if anything it goes up!
