Just learned from someone formerly in management at a Target store.
--ANY and all applications made in the store will result in a hard inquiry 100% of the time.
--There are store quotas for card apps that are strictly enforced. As long as the application gets submitted it counts towards the employee and store quota, even if it doesn't get approved.
--Many stores started using the "Try to get upgraded" line to get people to apply again who already had the card so the app quota could be met. Sometimes customers will actually get a Visa card, but that is simply because their credit has improved.
--When you are asked to "upgrade" to the Visa card it is a flat out lie. Basically it is something employees say to get people to run another application for customers who already have the regular card.
--The ONLY way to get upgraded to the Visa in a legit manner is for credit division to decide on its own that the customer qualifies, at which point a letter is sent to the customer. Typically that happens mostly during the 4th quarter.
--The register does give a "pre-approved" prompt at times. HOWEVER - all that means is that you have been pre-approved for a card in general, not a specific one. Typically because you used a debit/credit card and your name was matched up to our pre-screened offer database and matched a name that was pre-approved. However, it could be ANYONE with your exact name in that database and the customer won't know for sure until he/she actually applies.
MOST of this is true. I work there, so i'd know. Noone in my store uses the "try to get upgraded" line. But yes, we do have quotas to meet. For my store it is about 1.5% of all prompts at the register. If we can get 3 in a day at my store, that is excellent. Target Check Card applications count towards our quota too. Its referred to as a "conversion."
The thing is: The employees get NOTHING for getting applications. Sometimes the store will run promos for prizes, but thats it. Personal "conversion" percentage is also shown on our reviews...BS if you ask me.
Most apps I've ever had have gotten approved...with high CLs too...usually 5000+
I've have one "wait for processing" message in just over a year of working there.

Thats a shocker.Target gives a $5000. line of credit. Are you serious??
What's the % of approvals on the "pre-approved" offers? I received one at check-out a few months ago, but I was in the middle of a contract w/a credit repair agency and they strictly prohibited me from applying for new credit until I was finished w/their program (which I am now). Anyway, I think I'd like apply now, but was wondering how often those don't get approved.

Yeah all I ever see is the $200/$300 limits given out on the store card. Perhaps those that are pre-approved (rather than invited to apply) typically qualify for the visa?

I thought Target was more in line with a secured card when it come to starting CL. I learn something new here everyday.

Actually, I'm dead serious. In Wisconsin of all places, too. I just had a guy apply to save $55 on a TV and he was approved for a 6k line. He was probably 27 or so?
They are approved for a "temporary line" that is a percentage of the actual line that they can use until they recieve their card. His happened to be $700.
Now, I have seen smaller lines...of course...but that's only been a few times. A small number in comparison to the larger lines...
just an observation: I think a lot of it based on the income level they select at the register.

I'm sorry...but I can't really answer this. I've NEVER had anyone accept a pre-approved offer before. I'm very observant: and the people that get this offers generally tend to be "older," but not old by any means. They generally seem to use CCs through their bank, or a well known company (like citi) that they've probably had for a long time.
It seems as if anyone who gets the pre-approved offer just snuffs at the idea of a target card. They just say no thanks...and I leave it at that.
A piece of receipt paper should have printed off saying that you were pre-approved...do you still have this? You could take it in to the store and give it a shot...

and see, that's all I have too: the $200 limit. In order to get the high credit line, you have to be approved for the Visa. I believe the largest line on the store card is $2500? I wish i could provide you with proof...because it boggles my mind as well...
Like i said in previous posts: I believe they take AAoA and income very seriously...

This surprises me greatly....I applied for their silly card and was given a paltry $200.00 line with my scores. I sent the card right back to them and disputed it right off my report. But i do that with anyone that issues a ridiculously low limit, those card aren't worth having. But I'm glad this person received the $5,000 Grand KUDOS my friend.
