This happens quite often with Amex.  It usually only lasts for a few hours
The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid

I have to say, I wondered about that w/Cap 1 - I tried all weekend to make an extra payment and the site could NOT be found on any computer I tried - I was wondering what the heck was going on!

If the site couldn't be found, maybe you were using a computer at a place that either uses filtering software or some other method to completely block connection to that site ?

System is currently overloaded because AMEX is doing more credit limit decreases and account closing notifications to customers. Smiley Wink

If you are trying to make a payment, you can pay via telephone by calling 1-800-472-9297

Also I always suggest that you use your bank's billpay system to send the payment to American Express.

Just my 2 cents, GL

Re: is AMEX trying to make it hard on people to make payments??

Oh no I whole heartedly agree that AMEX is looking to make it hard on people to make payments. I had a serious health-related issue regarding my apartment (toxic mold) and I had to leave with extreme haste -- which depleted my excess cash... so I asked AMEX for a payment extension on my October payment. They granted it, but when I made the October and November payment ON MY NOVEMBER DUE DATE, Amex sent my already-closed account to a collection agency - which called the next day demanding the full outstanding balance right then and there!

I know it is fashionable around these parts to believe that AMEX, and other creditors, are out to 'get' the average cardholder, but to really think AMEX management is sitting around thinking of ways to prevent people from making payments on their debt is stretching credulity.  Responsibility has to be taken by the cardholder to make payments on time, and this means not waiting until the last minute to make payments online.  The vagaries of the internet are such that 'stuff' happens and systems can, and do, go offline.  But I've never had the AMEX go down for more than an hour or so.  It's not that big a deal.  Just make plans to pay well before the due date, and if you are scared of doing it online than use a postage stamp and mail your check in the old fashioned way.  Or pay it using your bank's bill payer system.  There are lot's of options.  But AMEX isn't thinking of ways to stop you from making payments on your debt.  Believe it, they want your money!
