Re: min spend to keep amex open

Yeah I've wanted a new camera for a while and the 0% is handy. Only drawback now is trying to pay off other cards and school loan. The good news is I've got my school loan balance at half of what it was when I first started payment on it. The other good news is the rate is pretty low.

I cant spend much now trying to pay things off. Will something small like redbox rentals each month be enough to keep amex from closing the card(everyday)? Maybe $10 a month or so.I know they make their money on fees and big spenders but I wont be one of those until things are paid. Their card will be paid off in two weeks and after that it wont see much use.

I can easily live without it but I already have it and the offers they sometimes come out with are nice.

My recurring $10 monthly donation to the local NPR station on my Zync has kept it open for close to two years now and I'm not expecting any trouble in the future either.  Haven't played with my check spending on it though, possible that's severely shrunken.

BCP hasn't gotten much either in the past year as my most recent grocery-like transactions don't trigger the bonus categories, but no problem there either with very sporadic spending on it.  You should be fine.

Re: min spend to keep amex open

If you are doing Amex Offers, doing it alone will make the card active enough, don't need anything else, if not, just split a small amount ($5 ~ $15) of your cable/phone bill which you have to spend anyway to the card once every several month.

Re: min spend to keep amex open

These all work, but I had a problem doing this. I had a recurring monthly charge ($6 magazine subscription) and after about 14 months, I used the card to buy $50 worth of stuff from AutoZone, and it was denied for "unusual spending" and I had to call in and get it approved. So I mean someeetthhhingggg goes on behind the scenes, but not closing the card.

Right back atcha Pizza!  My commute isn't much fun but NPR improves it massively, and some of their programs are downright awesome.  May be geek radio, but it is most excellent.
