First, I'd check your scores. If you have only had any credit reporting for 6 mos, you may not have any scores registered yet. Second, I sincerely doubt Amex will approve you w/CAs, unless possibly they are very old and PIF. You should try to PFD if possible.
If you have scores, you might be able to get Walmart. GE is prety good. They gave me my first rebuilder CC in March, when I only had 1 year of installment loans showing. But you really need to be sure you have a FICO with all 3 (or at least w/TU and EQ). You can get a free trial here and that will give you your EQ. If you don't have a score and app, you'll get an inq for nothing.

+1. The Wally card is a good suggestion; you'll get a free monthly FICO score each month with it as a bonus too.
I got the Walmart store cc with only 2 months of history. Doubt I had a score, it's pretty easy to get.
You could also try CapitalOne. I got one with no credit history at all, it was my first cc and it's unsecured.
It started at only $500, but after 6 months it goes up to $750 from their credit steps program.
After that, who knows about CLIs. They don't give them out much, but it's a good starter card to help your history until you can get a better one.
I started with the Student Journey card, although they didn't ask for any student information at all.
Just check out their cards for "Average Credit" -- if you click it, it says for people with limited credit history Good luck!
I started my credit journey in jan 2012 as of Feburary 4th i have my five cards reporting 3 secured cards and two unsecured cards. A discover student card $500 limit (had to fax in school schedule before i got approval) and an atlantic stewardship bank college rewards visa i use everyday for rewards purposes so i'd say its highly possible.
From my brief experience with credit: I got an unsecured Capital One Platinum MC with no history whatsoever, and I managed to get a Discover More with six months of history with Capital One. So, I'd say it's possible, of course, YMMV.
If you already have a card with good history, then it is possible to get a card with less than 6 months of history. I got 2 CCs within 3 months of getting my first card because I established good history with my first card.
