"Fraud Alert" from Cap One?

Back on Oct. 24th I applied for another Cap One card b/c I wanted the Venture card for the double miles.  I didn't get approved right away but they gave me the 7-10 message.  So, I waited a few days & called to see if they needed any additional info.  Much to my surprise they told me I had been approved & for $5000 (my biggest limit yet).  The following week the card came & I've been happily using it since.

Then tonight I got one of those emails from Cap One saying there was a "document" for me to review.  So, I logged into my account & it was a letter from them marked "Fraud Alert" or something like that.  The letter basically said they were writing to confirm that I applied for this account & to call if I didn't.  I almost deleted it (b/c I did apply for this card) & then I noticed that the name on the letter was to my DAD (there was no Jr & I'm a Jr).  It had HIS mailing address but they had our last name spelled wrong.

Now It's Saturday night & I'm freaking out.  The letter gave a tel number to call that's already closed for the evening.  Did I get approved because they somehow got us mixed up (my Dad has flawless credit & while mine is way better than it was a year ago, there are still a few dings on it)?  They pulled my report (there's a hard inq from them) & my Dad has never had a Cap One account.

I know I need to call them but what are the chances they approved this card thinking I was my Dad?  How could they possinly screw something up THIS bad?

If it helps put your mind at ease I look at it like this: They pulled your reports, there's no reason for them to have your dad's SSN, his address could be on your reports (maybe in previous addresses) and they applied it to you, the Jr. not being there doesn't phase me. The name on the card is correct and it was mailed to YOUR address right? I wouldn't freak out about it. Unless of course it reports to your dad's reports. Then you'll know you got your dad's card

Re: "Fraud Alert" from Cap One?

Well, I called the regular CS number & didn't even try the fraud number they gave me.  It seems that when then send these letters they sometimes pull old addresses & the address on the letter isn't always the current address but an old address on your report & I have lived at that address...it's just not been for over six years.  Seems to be a crazy way to do things but what do I know?  lol  They confirmed everything else is current & legit so i'll stop worrying.

Re: "Fraud Alert" from Cap One?

Capital One seems to put fraud alerts on my account all the time.  I don't have this problem with any other card.  Literally immediately after I was approved for my card last year (before even getting it in the mail), I was on fraud alert and they had to send me a new card for security reasons.  My only guess is that maybe this has to do with the fact that I changed addreses right before applying?  No idea.  Then after I got my second card in the mail, a week later it was on fraud alert again.  This happened on and off again for a month or two and then finally stopped.

Also, every time I make a purchase greater than $100 it seems to put off red flags and I need to call.  (I have a 17.5k limit and feel like I make purchases >$100 at least somewhat regularly..)

I do figure that if someone ever steals my card or something, they'll be on top of it, but really I don't understand what I'm doing to set off so many alerts on myself.  Who knows.
