"limit increase" versus "new account"

I checked my EQFX FICO this morning. It was 735. I asked for a limit increase on one of my two CAPONE cards (currently, the limit is 3000). I owe absolutely nothing on either card, and haven't owed anything on them for months. But I was turned down. And as I scour the myfico forums, it is apparent that CAPONE is notorious for "dubious decisions". Now I'm mad, because I'm thinking I could have gotten a card from a different company without a problem. Instead, I now have a recent "thumbs down" on my credit report. So I ask, does FICO view refusals on requests for credit limit increases as harshly as they do refusals for new credit card accounts? I would hate to fall below 700 because of this.

Which capone card was it? Sometimes there cards have a CL max. I've seen some that max out at 3000.  The only way to get more is to apply for another capone card.

FICO will never know.  FICO only knows about what's on your CR, and CLI denials are not reported to CRAs.

For that matter, FICO doesn't even penalize you for new account denials (except that you take a hit for the inquiry, but that happens whether you are approved or denied).

If you do not need any more available credit then do not even bother getting any more cards. With a 735 you are looking very good. New accounts can be tempting but it can take a while for your scores to recover. The application process can be addicting. Do you need more credit?

Re: "limit increase" versus "new account"

I just don't like the fact that CapitalOne askes questions they already know...  I also asked for a cli this moring and one of the questions was "Do you have balances in your other ccs?"  I was thinking in my head, 'Ummmmm...  You already know I transfered balances to another cc, why are you asking me this stupid question?'  I personally wanna better my credit and ditch Capitalone.  They are full of sh*t, imo...

Re: "limit increase" versus "new account"

They will not show that you got turned down for a CLI, and I doubt it was a hard pull from Cap1, unless they told you they would pull your CR's.

Cap 1 likes to see heavy usage (you don't use the card) and PIF'ers, so that is why they probably turned you down , not because of your scores

Re: "limit increase" versus "new account"

Better just because you transferred your balances that does not mean you transferred all of them (in their eyes). It is very possible to use the card up again once the balance has transferred, so technically they do not know this.
