requesting a credit limit increase

Does reqesting  a credit limit increase require a hard pull of your credit?

Re: requesting a credit limit increase

Generally, yes.

Even though you are an existing customer, you are asking for more credit.  Since you are initiating the request, the creditor has PP to do a hard pull.  If they were doing an account review, any report they pull would not generate a hard pull (i.e., it would be a soft).

If you want to ask for a CLI, you might call first and ask what their policy is about automatic increases.  My CCCs periodically increase my CLs without my requesting an increase.  That's really the only way to get a CLI without a hard pull.

Good luck!

Yes, but not usually with Amex, the exception to every rule  Smiley Happy

I don't think that Citi or BoA require a hard pull either.

Citi does sometimes.  If you click the luv button on their site and get a form asking for more information, it will usually be a hard pull.

Re: requesting a credit limit increase

If you call the CCC and ask whether it will be a hard or soft pull, don't count on getting an accurate response.  Once I called twice; one CSR said hard and the other said soft.  Of course it turned out to be a hard.   Smiley Mad

Can't remember if that was AmEx or Chase although it was probably in conjunction with a product change rather than CLI.

Whether it's a hard or soft pull depends on the CCC. For example Chase is notorious because they *always* pull a hard. It helps to ask a CSR whether it's a hard or soft, but keep in mind their answer may sometimes be wrong.

Re: requesting a credit limit increase

My experience is that BOA and Citi are soft pulls. BOA goes out of their way to say it's a soft pull unless prompted otherwise. Citi is basically the same...

Re: requesting a credit limit increase

I have had citi do both a soft and hard.  If I click the luv button and I get a form to fill out that for me has always been a hard.  If I click the luv button and I get a message automatically offering me an increase it has always been a soft.  BOA has never been a hard pull for me.
