still need a reason to build a cu relationship?

thursday i asked one of my cu's for a cli. we have had thier intro card for a year now and would like to grow the relationship. this one is going to be tough though. it's joint w/dw and they pull tu (my best at 686 when they pulled). the branch mngr commented about how well my dti is, my balances, uti, and number accounts at 0, all the progress i have made on my cr, but i may have too much available credit. he said he is going to speak with the higher ups for me. the real kicker is dw has a tu that is really screwy. tu has an addy that is in another state and 28 yes count them 28 derogs being reported. i explained all this before i asked for a cli and the mngr said if i just show him the dispute docs he would just look at my tu, since i'm working on clearing up the obvious tu error!

i spoke with him friday and he said he was still working on it, so it wasn't an automatic no. now what "prime" issuer would even think about granting a request like this?

Re: still need a reason to build a cu relationship?

When no other CC companies would give me a high CL both of the 1's I'm currently with gave me large CL with 9% int. I think they're more straight forward with you than the big banks. If I would have known about how much credit unions were better than banks when I 1st started rebuilding my credit I would have all CU CC in my wallet now. I'm with 4 CU now and I'm about to close my accounts at pnc and us bank.

I'm going a bit in the opposite direction, but ONLY because I read a post by myFICO_Barry on a different board that CU's don't rank quite as high as the so-called major banks. We just tore him apart on that (poor Barry), but he checked around and confirmed it, plus a member posted a negative comment on one of her FICO scores about not having a major bank card. It's stupid, but that's how the scoring currently is. It's not that huge of a penalty, but still...)

So one reason for my recent app attack was to pick up some cards from "real banks." I'm giving them a year to see if they like me, and if I like them, and then I'll pick 2 or 3 to keep and make everything else credit unions.

Just can't beat CU's for their personalized service!

I love cu's....Especially NFCU ..When noone else would give me a four digit cl Nfcu did...5k cl to be exact plus a loc....They definitely helped me out tremendously...Now having them I also picked up Chase with a 3k cl.....So, I think highly of Cu's.....

lol, i remeber that thread. yes, there is a score penalty (however slight). even taking that into account, i still think anyone who doesn't have a cu or two in thier lineup of financial institutions are excluding themselves from a great opportunity.

Re: still need a reason to build a cu relationship?

I like my CU.  I have had several car loans with them but no CC yet.  If and when I need a new CC I might try them but I would not want to cross them

It seems for car loans they are quick to do a repo and I suspect they would not be a good candidate for a GW on a late.

That is okay since I never intend to be in those situations.

Re: still need a reason to build a cu relationship?

I am very suprised to hear that a CU cc does not carry as much weight.  I have been reading how FICO does not care if your card is "prime" or "subprime," so this information here suprises me.

CUs are definately the way to go for a number of reasons.  I joined my first CU in 1991.  A colleauge convinced me to try a bank back in 2001.  I was so confused as to how things operate.  Transactions were so much more complicated and I found myself using all of my "free checks" just to get my own money!  I would only get a receipt with balance if I ASKED for one.  Never heard of such a thing. That relationship lasted under a year.  I went back to a local cu and a state employees cu.

I did open a couple of bank accounts this year. Chase sent me a $100.00 coupon to use if I opened a direct deposit account, which I did and have $25.00 a paycheck going into it.  And after reading all the online payment problems some people have here, I opened an HSBC online account specifically for paying cc bills.  Both of these accounts will also give me easier access to my money when out of town/state.

Nevertheless, the CUs are my primary accounts.  No fees on transactions, personalble, simply easy to deal with!  The people there know my history and my efforts.  Folks have stepped in and helped me when I was in jams.  Recently, I applied for a CC and I like that the online app. gave room to write a statement.  A rep called me on Sat. to discuss my application and told me that while she could not give me a specific score, I was off by a hair and my scores are nowhere as high as dnm45227's .  We agreed I would be back in touch with her in a few months.

I agree, people really should look into CUs.  Good Luck with everything!  I am sure they will continue to work with you.
