AMEX may be forgiving on a 10 yr old account, I would for charge card. Good luck!!!
+1
The AMEX "forgiveness" situation vaies by individual and would also depend on whether the CO was paid off/satisfied. As far as Chase and/or Citi, not so forgiving if those TLs were closed due to what you've shared above and depending how chronic and recent those blemishes occurred.
An item to keep in mind, high CL approvals usually tend to occur for individuals who exhibit a solid and clean CR profile and scores that hover in the upper ranges with very little utilization and low DTI ratios.
My aaof a is 9 years. All the chase, citi, amex old stuff is 8+ years ago. I have 100% clean history. My income in 70k with only my $918 month mortgage payment as debt. My tu fico is 817,ex should be higher with no inquiries and the exact same info. I closed one citi and 1 chase account voluntarily after I paid them off, and citi/chase each closed 1 for late payments and being over the limit. These were also pif. This was 8 years ago. The amex was sent to collections 10 years ago. I paid the collection company but I'm sure amex only got a small piece of the money. I always keep my utilization at 1% before an app.

I asked awhile back on how to get a high limit card. At the time I had a boa with 5k limit,a c1 with 5k limit,a Lowes with $225 limit and a HSBC with $700 limit. No negative history, fico's +/- 800, low inquiries, and $70k income.
Following advice offered, I now have a c1 10k, boa 10k, Lowes 5k, and HSBC 5k. This was accomplished with only a HP to tu and a HP to eq. I have 2 tu inquiries, 3 eq inquiries, and 0 ex inquiries.
So I'd still like to get one more high cl card. I would like someone who pulls ex, so the CSP comes to mind. But I had a couple chase cards that are now closed that were chronically late and over the limit. The same goes for citibank and I charged off a amex card 10 years ago.So who should I turn to now and is there a sure thing high cl card I can apply for?
My stepdaughter is going to get me into USAA and nfcu but it will take a few months before she can join. I know these are worth waiting for so I don't want to mess up these two by getting too many new accounts or inquiries while I wait.
Any helpful advice would be appreciated.
The best of luck to you!

I thought about the Barkley arrival or the ring card. When I say I'm looking for a high cl card, I just want another one with a 10k cl. Back when I destroyed my credit 8-10 years ago I never thought I'd be in position to want/expect a 10k limit on a brand new trade line.
I'll be able to join nfcu in a couple months through my stepdaughter and I believe my profile should get me a home run credit card with them. So I don't want to get a Barkley card and have them haggle me in a few months when I get nfcu. My last cc account was Lowes opened four years ago. So will going for Barkley now, and then nfcu in a couple months get me in trouble with one or the other? Also if I try sending in one of the preapprovals that amex is sending me, will that work against Barkley or nfcu? Also I think I read that if I'm still amex blacklisted, they'll just deny me with no credit pull. Any thoughts on that. Thanks for the help.
Hey longclimbback!
Yes, it is true that with your profile, you will likely net a good CL from NFCU. I also think that with your current profile, you could get the Barclays with no AA from them in a couple of months if you want to app the NFCU card.
Do you need both cards?... Barclays and NFCU? I think you will net a dbl digit CL with Barclays when all is said and done and the same with NFCU. I'm thinking 20K or better with NFCU.
With regards to Amex, you will not receive a HP for apping if you have been blacklisted from all I have read on these forums. However, at your stage of in the credit game, are you apping just to get CCs or are you apping to grow a really strong profile to support your spending?
You've grown a good profile so far. I'd really only app what benefits me at this time. I think you are beyond the point of credit repair. Does your spending support a couple of AF cards? Will you really benefit from the rewards that are offered?
If you decide to app for the cards: I'd app in this order:
Barclays then Amex. In 3 months time... when you are eligible, app the NFCU card of choice.
I don't think you will have any trouble with these lenders. Now if your profile were different, I'd not be recommending this with regards to Barclays.
Most people that experience AA from Barclay's have marginal CRs and have multiple inqs reconned the denial and then app for more cards.
The only problem you will experience is from the CC companies you have a bad history with and that's only probable as time passes.
Thanks improvingmycredit . I'm trying to get cards that will be useful and to build my portfolio. The ring card with 8% interest and arrival with 2.2% rewards are better than anything I have now respectively. Amex would be nice for the backdating as my first card was in 1991. I will apply for the cards in the order you spelled out and 1st week of June I'll hopefully get a couple more solid trade lines.I have a couple pre screened offers for amex blue sky card. Would this be a good one to apply for with amex?the rewards seem descent and no annual fee.
