Many CUs will let you join as long as you join one of their affiliated organizations.

You can join the National Sheriffs Association and be eligible for JFCU.
You can join the National Military Family Association and be eligible for Penfed.
You can join National Space Society and be eligible for NASA FCU.

The fees to join these organizations are usually low, around $15-25.  And you almost never have to renew next year to maintain your CU membership.

These are just a few examples.  If there's a CU you're interested in joining, just call and ask them if there is an organization you can join to make you eligible.

Navy FCU and USAA are the only major national CUs I know of that don't let you in this way.  You have to have a bona fide military connection to get into those.

Agreed - I have checking, savings, HELOC and CC with my local CU

If you live in the southern California area, Wescom Credit Union is open to all residents.

From their website, wescom.org, "Anyone in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties can open a Wescom Credit Union account."

Most credit unions don't require you to be a part of an organization.  Most of them are regional.  You can qualify just be walking into the credit union and signing up.  No special qualifications.

Yes, but there's not always a regional one available.  I live in NYC, and I can't find a single CU I'm eligible for based on where I live, if you can believe that.

Re: want to join a cu

Thanks, MV.  Believe me though, I've been through both of those lists several times.  All of the CUs listed in those two lists that are located in Manhattan (where I work) or Brooklyn (where I live) are either defunct, offer no CC products, or are open only to employees of particular companies or in particular fields, ethnic backgrounds, or religious affiliations.  I can't find a single one that is open to me just based on where I live or work.

That's why I've limited myself to the bigger national CUs.
