I stumbled upon this last night while falling asleep, and thought maybe I'd dreamed it. I've never even heard of this before, and I've been with both Amazon and Amex for a long time. This article explains how to save up to 40% on an Amazon purchase by using one Amex MR point. Is anyone familiar with this? Apparently, it's not new.
Before you submit your next order to Amazon, you can save big by using your American Express Membership Rewards points. Through Oct. 31, targeted Amazon customers will receive either 20% or 40% off their next order, up to $40. All you need to do is redeem one Membership Rewards point to earn the deep discount.
Here’s what you need to know about this great offer, and how to maximize it...
That's a known trick that gets mentioned both here and elsewhere every time the promotion is run, 3-4 times a year. There is usually a post on DoC mentioning that the promo is back each time it is resurrected. There are usually multiple versions of the same promo where they all have the same cap on savings but the spend threshold/percentage back varies.
i.e. one person can get 20% off with a $30 cap on savings i.e. $30 savings on $150 spend if they specify 1 MR ($0.01) and put the rest on their AMEX card whereas another person can get 40% off with a $30 cap on savings i.e. $30 savings on $75 spend of they specify 1 MR ($0.01) and put the rest on their AMEX card.
Not all items are eligible for the promotion so you have to pay attention to the discount being applied when checking out.
Amazon runs similar promotions with Citi TYP and Discover points as well but they aren't as frequent and generally aren't as lucrative.
Thanks, @coldfusion. It was completely new to me. Today I went ahead and added my Amex cards to my Amazon account! I always pay for Amazon purchases with my Amazon Prime Store Card because of its across-the-board 5% cash back, so it'll take some conscious thinking/work to alter that habit so I can give this a try.
