A CA hurt my feelings today

Smiley Sad

Joe called from an unnamed CA asking for one of our employees. We created a strict Privacy Policy and usually disavow any knowledge of said employee, I'll call her Jane, and we don't forward calls or take messages. Caller ID helps!

Anyway, the conversation went like this:

Me: Hello
Joe: Is Jane there?
Me: This is HE.
Joe: Jane, this is Joe from So and So CA calling in regards to OC debt.
Me: To verify, will you read me my social security number.
Joe: Yes, it is xxx-xx-xxxx.
Me: Thank you very much.
Joe: WAIT! You sound like a guy!
Me: It's French.
Joe: What?!
Me: Jane is French....Jan'e
Joe: This isn't Jane! Get me Jane!
Me: No, I was pulling your leg, Joe, my name is llecs. Isn't it illegal to read off someone else's info or to talk to a third party? Isn't that a violation of the FDCPA?
Joe: Get me Jane!
Me: Jane is unavailable, but I'm free to chat.
Joe: I won't get off the phone until you get me Jane.
Me: Terrific. The day has been slow anyway.
[by this point in the conversation, I had already googled his info and found that he is in Boston]
Me: Did you catch the Sox game last night?
Joe: What?
Me: You are in Boston, aren't you?
Joe: Yes.
Me: Did you catch the Sox game last night?
Joe: Yes.
Me: Didn't they play Kansas City?
Joe: Yes. .......I'M NOT PLAYING!
[Joe Hangs Up]

He never finished the conversation. What is he not playing? Baseball? Yahtzee? What? Needless to say my feelings were hurt because he hung up on me. Should I call him back?

BTW, Jane [not real name] is a real employee but works in another state. Sorry Jane. We do tell our employees to never give out our info. We get over a dozen calls like that a week. Wish there was some way to capitalize on this.

That part was very scary. The CA gave out her SSN without any pause or forethought.

Re: A CA hurt my feelings today

Funny, when it is you they want, it is like pulling teeth to get THEM to verify YOUR ssn. They want you to verify all this stuff. I tell them, you read it to me and I will tell you if it is correct or not. 9 times out of 10 they will not do it. I won't give my personal info over the phone and it really ticks them off. Had a guy tell me that since I would not verify my information he would assume the debt was mine. I told him to go ahead, I could use the money I would get from the law suit. Never heard from him again, and it is not on my CR any longer.

No idols here, except I do idolize my wife with all the hats she wears. Smiley Happy I'm just the janitor.

With all of these calls coming into the office, it has given me the insight on how CAs work. I had personal experience in the past, but I ignore all of those calls. Now that I have a chance to field a few, my dislike and distrust of CAs have solidified.

Two new tactics to report:

1) A CA called pretending to be a future employer of one of our employees. Now I am more than eager to help them out including recommendations. This "future employer" called and asked several questions. Normally, I'd ask them to send over paperwork so I could fill it out and include a more refined answer. But this CA/"future employer" insisted to do so over the phone. I gave out traits, history, qualities, etc for about 10 minutes and then she concluded the interview. And that was that.

The next day the same phone number called back and this time asked for our employee. I told her that our employee doesn't work here that she works in another office out of state. The person sounded angry and hung up. I googled the number and it came back as a CA. Scumbag.

2) Another CA called pretending to be a family member stating that there was an emergency and that they needed to get in touch with our employees. I was immediately suspicious because the call came from a number came from 561 area code or S. Florida. I asked for the callers info, contact name, number, cell, etc. so I could pass it along to our guy. The caller refused to provide any info. I later googled that number and it too was a CA.

My conclusion, never ever trust a CA. Their word is not their bond.
