A trivial error and my credit destroyed

Three years ago I forgot about a credit card (I am in my 80s) and the account became delinquent.  It was only a small amount - $104.  As soon as I found out about this failure I paid off the account.  After 39 years of perfect credit and paying off three mortgages, my credit was serevely impacted.

Since then I have paid all my credit cards promptly.  Still I am refused credit cards due to this delinquency.  I contacted the Barclays Bank and they told me to get lost.   If I had been sick they would remove the delinquency report.

Any suggestons?

What are your current FICO scores?

A 3 year old late on an otherwise clean file shouldn’t have a catastrophic effect.

Re: A trivial error and my credit destroyed

Age related cognitive decline is no trivial matter. This condition is definitely considered an illness; if I were you I wouldn't give up. I'd contact them again, and speak with another representative or even someone higher up the chain.  People even younger than yourself experience periods of cognitive impairment. There's no reason you should be penalized for a medical condition beyond your control- especially when you've taken initiative to remedy it. Good luck, do persevere with this and let us know how things work out.

My FICO score is 752.  But Citi is denying me a credit card due to the delinquency.

Your score is still good.

That said, the late may run some interference for you, I suppose. It's effects will continue to lessen over time.

If I was you, I'd keep trying goodwill requests from Barclays. Writing letters often have the best results. The key is to be polite and honest and find someone willing to grant the goodwill deletion of the lates.

hoepfully someone with experience related to Barclays goodwill will come along and chime in.

good luck!

Experience with Barclay Bank?

Three years ago I forgot a Barclay credit card and failed to make the payment due until the acount was delinquent.  That is the kind of problem people in their 80s face.

I owed $104 which I paid as soon as I was reminded.  Since Barclay reported a delinquency,  I am denied credit cards and overcharged for insurance.

Has anyone had success with Barclay to have a delinquency report removed?  If so, ho did you accomplish this?

You can search for Barclays Executive Office or Barclays Goodwill Success.

This thread has some information:

My friend recently had them remove a 30 day late by emailing the EO for his JetBlue card. I wish you luck.
