Add me as an "Authorized User"

I read on one of the postings here that if someone with "great" credit adds me as an "authorized user" my score will go up.

Is this a guarantee? Will it add to my credit report and then come across as too many open accounts? If the credit card holder defaults or goes into collections do I go with them?

What's considered a good credit school? 680 or above?

Just trying to get all the facts.

Thanks..

There is no guarantee. Some lenders report AUs. Some do not.

If someone adds you to their CC, and that lender reports to the CRAs, then yes you will reap the benefit of that card holders TL.

If the card holder defaults, then yes you're CRs will likely reflect that adverse activity as well. However, AU accounts are easy to dispute off your CRs if the TL turns sour. FCRA, and several lawsuits against the credit industry (like Johnson v. MBNA), don't permit the negatives but allow the positives.

But the benefit is going away as Fair Isaac is rolling out an update to the scoring model that will not count AU accounts.

If you are looking to improve your scores, you do have a small window to act. If your spouse, or someone you trust and someone who trusts you, were to add you today, you would likely reap the benefit within the next 30 days. With that benefit in hand of a better FICO score, you could then apply for a CC on your own.

If this is a spouse's CC, then I suggest ya go ahead and see about converting the account to a joint account. Have your spouse call the CCC and ask. Just make sure they are going to keep the account open and simply add you. You don't want them closing the account and reopening a new one, that would likely hurt your spouses credit short term, at least a little.

The term good score is indeed a very nebulous term. Good for what and to whom?

If you've just come out of a BK, then 680 would be a world class score, and perhaps an impossible feat. 2-3 years outta BK, possibly doable and very good indeed.

If you have a number of collections and charge offs, paid or not, 680 is a great score.

If you're applying for a home loan, while 680 is good, 720 and over is the best for getting you the best terms on the loan.

If you have absolutely no adverse reporting at all on any of your CRs, established credit, no inquires, no recently opened accounts, all TLs well established, a good mix of revolving and installment debt, 1-9 percent util on your CCs, then I would be wondering why my score was such a low 680.

Re: Add me as an "Authorized User"

It will improve your credit right now, but it will all go away in the near future as a new scoring system update is goint to be introduced soon that will NOT recognize AUs. So people who have been using it will see their scores drop.

Re: Add me as an "Authorized User"

I would be careful of this for another reason that I have not seen discussed here.  I am an AU on my sister's amex.  The balance is not too high, but that particular balance is included in my debt obligations each month.  FICO adds this balance to my overall utilization, even though I am only an AU.  I don't think that it is supposed to be included, but it is, nevertheless.  BTW, all three reports add this to my utlization and all three reports indicate that I am an AU only...Just an FYI that this may affect you utilization would could cause another negative factor....

Re: Add me as an "Authorized User"

So many things to take into consideration! Great info you all have given me! Thanks!

Ok so my next question is this.....if I do decide to add it and the new law comes out after I add it will it be removed and my score drop or will my score stay the same? I know in one of the postings it was stated that it would go away but does that mean my score increase or just that the AU wont have any affect any longer and that my score will stay the same?

Re: Add me as an "Authorized User"

Answer#1 - ask Fair Isaac Smiley Very Happy Answer#2 - current thought seems to be that all AUs will be ignored, meaning people who have been using them a great deal; could face a VERY significant score drop. Thise MOST likey to be badly hit are those with lousy credit who have been artificially inflating their scores, and spouses (predominantly women) who have been using their spouse's credit. In the case of husband and wife, it is easy to become jointly liable, so both will get the credit

Re: Add me as an "Authorized User"

Sounds good!

Now next question: I have a ton of them....:-) My husband filed BK about a year ago but is working to reestablish his credit. He has 2 credit cards for which he has no lates. His score is actually higher then mine and I haven't even filed BK....should I ask him to add me as an AU?

Re: Add me as an "Authorized User"

If he adds you as an AU you should get a score increase until the new rules kick in. When they do, your score will go back to where they were.

If you get added as an AU on someone else's CC, the TL should show up on your CRs within 30 days. Let's call it 60 days just to be pessimistic.

OK, so, it's mid August and your FICO score should now have climbed up, at least a little. You should then try to apply for a CC on your own and see whether your own FICO score will hold you afloat. Assuming you get approved, you get your new CC.

In September, one of the three CRAs, don't yet know which one, will adopt the new FICO model and your AU CC will stop benefiting your FICO score, and it will probably drop down close to where you are now. However, you still have your own CC in your own name. Pay it on time, keep util between 1 and 9 percent, and it keep helping you.

Again, in September, only one of the three CRAs will adopt the new model. If your AU CC reports to all 3 CRAs, then only one of your FICO scores will drop a little. The other two will remain at their elevated levels.

Sometime next year, your AU CC will stop giving you a benefit altogether.

The AU CC is yours. The bank won't come repossess it because the FICO model changed. In fact, I suspect the bank will offer to convert the account to a joint account, if the primary card holder is willing.

Have him contact the CCC and ask about adding you as a joint card holder so you both will jointly own the account and jointed be responsible for the debt. This way you will continue to benefit from the CC after the AU benefit goes away.

If the CCC wants to close the account and open a new one, have your husband tell them no that he wants to keep the account open and simply add you as a joint card holder who is jointly responsible for the balance. They should be willing to do this as it reduces their risk.
