Re: Am I getting scammed by a fake debt collector?

I agree with submitting a formal complaint to the CFPB.

But...do not tell the collection agency you filed a complaint.  That way, if they harass you some more, you can send new complaints against them down the line, and the CFPB just love repeat offenders.

I just found this, don't know why I didn't think to reverse lookup the number before. Look at the dates posted by people, looks like a newer scam.

As much as I want to just forget this, but man, this guy had an answer for everything so I assume people have been taken by this before and I will spend the time and energy to hold them responsible. I have alot of info about their company that I've gathered. I will contact the authorities you folks mentioned.

I don't know how scammers like this live with themselves. Are they legit companies that do illegal stuff, or is it all fake?

Yeah it's amazing but remember that junk debt buyers are paying pennies or less on the dollar for debts.

If you buy $100,000 in old debts for $1500 and collect on just two of them a month, you're doing really well.

There are courses you can take to learn to become a vulture and scam people out of house and home for fun and profit.  I know exactly the type of folks who are attracted to that market.

Re: Am I getting scammed by a fake debt collector?

He is  either stupid  and wants to pay   FDCA settlement or just the usual scam guy.  This one seems a little bold since he will take calls.  CFPB will just make him promise to play fair going foward.  I have used this on Equifax before.    It seems he will  stay put for atleast 5 minutes. That being the case he can  be served by your consumer attorney.  The question is are there any assets worth going after?

I personally believe in the Backwoods Smalltown form of justice.  There are several versions of this.  Some more ethical than others. I think talking about them woud voilate  the terms of service. So use your  mind.  I can't do them except in my Fantasy. Shame on me.

Re: Am I getting scammed by a fake debt collector?

I received this call to the T but it was a female I spoke with around the same time as you. Fast forward to today, none of the emails I sent or the fax I most recently sent have been received by them. I submitted a complaint to CFPB with the very litte information I have so we'll see where this goes.

Do you mind sharing what has happened with your situation so far?

Re: Am I getting scammed by a fake debt collector?

Nothing has happened. I call the guy once in a while to leave messages about how he's a piece of human trash, call him a scammer, etc. Just to remind him he is sub-human.
But legally speaking, nothing has happened. I did some further reading and googling, and this exact scam hit alot of people. If u Google the phone number, you'll find some long threads of people with the same story as us. These guys were good, and I'm sure sadly there were some victims but thankfully I did not end up one of them.

No I have not.

My favorite story fact or fiction I don't know. This was told by one of our clients a manager in Federal Law Enforecement.  The "victim" worked for the Feds.  1)  jam cell phones and cut land line of scammer's operation 2)  The hunted becomes the hunter 3) scammer  basically becomes his prisoner 4) scammer over the next 48 hours to stay alive,  picks who in his crew will get shot 5) scammer finally is taken out to extreme middle of no where in place where he could not get back alive.    There is a lot more but fact or fiction?

Re: Am I getting scammed by a fake debt collector?

I just got a call yesterday from this PS Group from Nevada regarding an 8 year old debt. Fast talkers, had an answer for everything. Wanted payment over the phone but said we are not "debt collectors" we are a "pre-ligitation firm" trying to settle this account out of court.
I requested a validation of debt in writing to which they stated they are not required by law to release and that I will be notified of the debt when they file in court against me and through chex systems (. Com). I replied that this is a time-barred debt that surpasses the california statute of limitations, and they said they 'still have a right to sue and they will file an exparte to request the case be heard without me present so a ruling will be made against me to garnish my wages.' When I asked for the company name and address they refused to give the address and said I 'will hear from their lawyer.' The address they have on file for me is old, 2 houses ago (same town though). They account number they gave couldn't even be verified by my bank because it's from 8 years ago and out of their system - the debt was sold to a management company that has since closed down. So I have no way to verify the charges the guy is going after.
I talked to several lawyers today and they all said it sounds like a scam or that they bought old debt and are using scare tactics to try and get us to make a partial payment to restart the SOL time frame. So glad I didn't agree to anything, rattled my cage quite a bit though. So from what I've been told, I need to wait to see if they file against me and serve me with a hearing date. If they file an exparte and a ruling is made against me without my knowledge, I can still fight it using the "time-barred debt" and have the file dismissed - or so I was told.
