Amex car rental insurance

Hi guys,

I have the gold Amex wich comes with the car rental protection. I understand that it is secondary to my main insurance and it only covers damage or theft of the rental car. I understand it doesnt cover liabilty or injuries.... just the car itself. If I got into an accident, I'm wondering will it cover my deductible? Since normally deductible would go towards paying repairs on my own car.  I called cs to ask about it and the guy just kept repeating that its not liability insurance, but only "purchase protection". We probably have a different understanding of deductible. Anyway, if anyone could clarify this, I'd really appreciate any insights.

Thanks so much.

Alex

Re: Amex car rental insurance

IIRC, when the coverage is secondary, it only pays out after your insurance pays out and yes can be used towards your deductible and for what your personal insurance does not cover associated with the rental car. But you’re gonna have to read your specific terms and conditions.

I concur, the AMEX coverage will pay for the deductible in the damage or theft claim.

Re: Amex car rental insurance

Now if you did not have personal insurance or were out of the country, secondary becomes primary. FYI, IIRC.

Re: Amex car rental insurance

AmEx also offers the Premium Car Rental Insurance for a flat fee. I opt for this every time as it’s primary and has no deductible.

Re: Amex car rental insurance

Yeah, that's exactly why I have the CSP; it comes with free primary.

Yes, you can upgrade AmEx to primary.

+1  My main reason for sticking with CSR while still hanging in the AMEX world. CSP is a VERY affordable way to get Primary coverage. 95$, you rent for 3 days and its basically paid for (assuming $30/day for complete coverage) or 4 trips paying for Amex coverage (I THINK it's $25/trip up to 30 days).

CARDS:
AMEX CS Plat | NSL -- Chase Freedom Flex | $19,000
AMEX Gold | NSL -- Citi Double Cash | $10,000
AMEX HH NAF | $1,000 -- Uber Visa | $5,000
CSR | $29,000 -- USAA Plat | $8,000
USAA AMEX | $23,000 -- MB Boundless | $11,900 -- CFU | $3,600 -- PenFed Pathfinder | $10,000 -- MS Plat | NSL

BANKS:
NFCU | USAA | PenFed | Schwab Bank | First Bank | Chase
