Hello all, I need some help on how to handle this situation. My husband had a BarclaycardUS credit card. Credit limit was $4800 and approximate balance due is $1675. I was added to that card as an AU shortly after the card was issued a few years ago. They were reporting on both of our credit reports.
My husband passed away unexpectedly in March. Barclay is not trying to hold me responsible for the balance due nor are they accruing any fees/interest etc., however it continues to show on my credit report and they refuse to remove it. There are no past due payments and they are no longer reporting the account with any updates (last reported in April). The account shows as closed and paid as agreed.
I explained to them that I am not responsible for the account and would they please remove it from my credit report and their reply was NOPE. I probably talked to at least a half a dozen people and they either couldn't help me or they confirmed the no answer. Their stance is the money is owed so the reporting remains. It's my understanding I am not liable for this debt as an AU and I wonder if I have any recourse to have it removed from my credit report.
I tried to sign in to my husband's account (I am the executrix of his will) to see if I could remove myself as AU but access to the account has been revoked.
My Question: What would be the best way to approach having this completely removed from my credit report? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Have you already tried disputing this account with the CRA's stating you are an AU and not responsible for account?
I am very sorry for your loss...

HI Jnbmom, thank you for your condolences.
I have not attempted to dispute with the CRA's yet. I thought that might be the recommended route to take but I wanted to check first.

Oh yes I would definately dispute with the CRAs and simply state you were an AU on this account and not responsible please remove and see how that goes....................... others I hope chime in but that is how I would approach it since Barclays is not helping you.
I was an AU on my dad's credit card. It had a balance of $15,000 with a $16,000 limit and was destroying my credit score. I asked my dad to remove me, which he did, and then waited a few months for them to remove it from my credit report, which they never did. I finally just filed a dispute with all 3 CRA's and it was removed within a few weeks on all 3.
Also, I'm terribly sorry about your loss. My suggestions would be to file a dispute with TU, EX, and EQ. I'm not sure what the outcome will be as you were never officially removed as an AU, but maybe someone more experienced with this kind of stuff can chime in. Seems pretty messed up that they won't remove it for you as it's not even your debt. I hope you get the answers you're looking for.

Queen-_Etherea, Thank you very much for your condolences. I guess I knew that I would have to dispute it but I am new at this and I wanted to be sure I don't make a bigger mess than it already is.

Oh I completely understand! You're in the right place and the people here are very willing to help. I firmly believe my scores would still be in the 580's if it wasn't for this forum. I was carrying a balance on both of my credit cards (before I opened all the new accounts this month) and didn't know I needed 3 credit cards to maximize scoring. I feel so well informed about my credit and the steps I need to take to fix it. I wish you all the luck and hope you get the outcome you're looking for!
