I called SST/CB&T back and they tell me that they don't report AU information to the CRAs. I asked whywhen the account was owned by Wamu/Providian that they reported AU info for her and how come it didn't carry over and she said "no idea" & just that SST does not report AU info. Gee, thanks Wamu for selling my perfect history account with constant util (and interest wamu was making) and dinging my wife 15-20 and me 5-9 points. Oh, I also asked about converting it to a joint account and they don't do that either. Guess I'm SOL.
Are you carrying any balance with them? Paying for any extras? Car loan or mortgage with them? IRA, CD, checking or savings account with them?
If so, you could visit the branch, talk with a CSR or manager. Be polite, but firm. You had a good history with WAMU, and you'd like to continue that with SST. You simply want the CC converted to a joint account so they will continue reporting your good payment history to the CRAs. Explain to them that opening a new joint account will accomplish that, but you'll lose the good history of the previous account when you close it. [That's not really true. It's an emotional bluff. Just like the lie they told you that they won't convert it to a joint account.] Tell them if they are going to put a good customer thru a lot of hoops, then you're going to have to consider going elsewhere. Tell them it seems like a silly reason for them to lose a good customer.
Don't make threats or talk about lawsuits, not that there's any grounds for a suit anyway. Remain composed, claim, and reasonable.
If they absolutely flat out refuse, then ask them whether you would be charged any additional fees on the CC if you closed all other accounts with SST? That's about as flagrant and obvious a threat as you can make, while still keeping on good terms.
Don't take any decisions to close accounts with SST, yet. Sleep on it. Review the terms of the CC. They might have some danged thing wherein they charge you $100 annual fee for the CC if you don't have a checking account with them. If not, then start weighing whether it's worth it to take all your accounts, except the CC, and go elsewhere.
Consider getting rid of the AU CC. Don't just shred it. Call customer service and tell them you want to keep the account open and keep the primary card holder CC, but you want to cancel out the AU CC since it's not reported to the CRAs anyway. Could be once the AU CC closes, that will trigger something in sales to call and inquire about opening a joint account.
