Set up a minimum payment due auto-pay on all your cards. You have many options but one options you do not, or should not, have is not paying your minimum payement. Setting up an auto-pay that will only deduct your minimum payment gives you the freedom to choose how much of the remaining balance you want to pay and the insurance that you will always make your minimum payment due.

+1 I agree, the auto payments act as a back up plan for me. I usually pay down or pay-off before the statement cuts but I like the idea that if my calculations are incorrect or there is some "fine print fees" I miss, my auto payment will ensure there wont ever be a late payment. I remember having an issue with payments not counting once because of paying it twice in one billing cycle or something like that. Luckly I was able to get the late removed.
I like the autopay that has some flexibility on the date. I notice some pay on the last day before it's due. I'd prefer to set auto-pay 3 days before it's due in case there's problems. Also I pay manually as my primary option. Auto-pay I only use as backup.

Im also planning on setting up autopay for my cc with balances. But id like to know- can you cancel it if you wanted to for a month? For example, if i paid a large amount a week before the autopay, and decide that if rather have the extra cash (min payment), can i cancel that one auto payment?
Of course, you set up auto-pay online on your own and you can turn it off and on as you wish.

You can poll but you need to do what works for you. I manually pay my bills with each paycheck. That said, many find autopay to be helpful and a safety net to ensure that accounts are kept current with at least minimum payments.
