I disputed a collections item on my credit, the collections agency sent me back info in the mail directing me to get a police report for identity theft. I didn’t dispute that someone stole my identity…I disputed the account…that its not mine…. I contacted the original creditor and they don’t have anything on file that the account belongs to me. I believe the CA knows this and is trying to get me to do unnecessary things to discourage me from moving forward with my dispute.
My understanding is that once you dispute and ask them to verify the debt they claim you owe they are to respond to you with that information…not asking me to get a police report.
I know they know the account isn’t mine because a week after I sent my letter they sent me mail asking me to pay 50% of the balance.
Is the CA handling this correctly?
