I was wondering who offers the best checking account with these criteria.
- no minimum balance / average
- direct deposit requirement acceptable
- free ATM withdrawls if not a major presence (WF, Chase, etc)
I would probably define best as access to lower home and auto financing, any kind of interest, (not sure what else, open to ideas)
Any suggestions are certainly welcome, thanks in advance

There are an lot of options you can go with online banks like ally or cap one , that will throw in interest, which is higher than interest you would get from brick and mortar savings accounts!!!. . Most of the non brick and mortar variety will have access to all point atms. you can goto ally and cap ones website and they have atm finders and you can enter in your zipcode .
Have you looked at CU they usually have no min balance requirements, the thing is with CU you may need to take an HP to get access to checking accounts.
Third option is brokerage houses like schwab and fidelity they have checking accounts that would satisfy your requirements, but they don't do auto/mortgages.
That's a great breakdown, thanks Mong .
CUs have the best rates it would seem like. Maybe I should get in with one of them in prep for a house purchase in a few years...
Yes that is why I chose an cu.I like alliant they have interest checking , and will start preparing for future auto loan
