Blind app...

This shows how I have changed in the last few years.  I am big on paying cash for things.  I am ok using credit if it's an emergency or a large purchase.

 

I needed a new roof -- fast.

 

1.  Company A -- verbally told me that the national chain was offering 12 months, no interest.  I asked for the application/paperwork.  He gave me the store application.  It clearly said 6 months, no interest.  It also said there was a 3% transaction fee if you were on a payment plan.  The interest was outrageous (in my opinion!).  Although the program was 6 months, no interest, the interest would be added daily.  IF it was paid off in full, by their determination, and qualified for the no interest, they would credit it back later.   ALSO -- in tiny, tiny print, it said that they could change the terms anytime, no notice, no reason.  The date of last print -- October 2009.  Oh, when I pointed out the terms, the sales person (and several other people from his company) told me to ignore what the application said.  They said it was different if I signed the contract at home.

 

I declined working with this company.

 

2.  Company B -- offered 6 months, no interest.  I asked for the application/paperwork.  There was none.  I was told to give my information over the phone to the finance department in the office.  (I called them for more information.)   The person taking the information over the phone would input it, as we talked, on the computer.  A decision would be given within minutes.  (A computer generated approval, no other people involved.)  While the computer would grant, or not, approval, the big bank (Wells Fargo) could later change the terms.  The roofing company actually decided what terms they would offer the consumer, then ask the computer for approval.  Then the bank would (days later) have the final say.  Of course, any change in terms would be told to the customer AFTER the work started and there would be no backing out.  And since nothing was signed, the consumer would be screwed.

 

I declined working with their finance choices.

 

Two years ago, I probably would have gone with either one of them.

 

Both sales people were NOT happy with me for exploring their finance options further.  They were NOT happy that I declined - they assumed that I would blindly accept whatever was offered because I desperately needed the work done. 

 

To me, it's amazing how much I have changed.  Smiley Happy

Most consumers don’t even bother to read the terms and conditions. They just sign to get on with things. It is great that you analyzed the terms and conditions before agreeing/accepting any of the two offers.
