I share John's concern about the timing of these "promotions." It's exasperating for me, but that's all it is, and I don't have major borrowing planned any time soon. I think it would be awful if this happened right before a major event like a mortgage or car loan app.
I have to hope that for mortgages, that look at a whole lot more than scores, the lenders could account for the score change and still give the good rate. It's scarier for things like car loans and definitely CC's, that can be very score-driven and thumbs-up, thumbs-down. One more thing to turn my hair grey!
John, I hope the timing works out for you. If you are still around a year out from buying a house, I think your scores should have recovered and then greatly increased by then. My current plan is to throw all the score tweaking strategies out the window, PIF everything weekly but the home equity line of credit, and just grimly wait them out. Plus the GW's, of course!
Maybe we should rename ourselves the Bucket Brigade!
