CC Companies Bait and Switch Scheme

I applied for a Department store credit card with I think a mastercard logo. I was approved and all was well. Until I got the card in the mail. It was strictly a department store CC. Only usable in that particular store.

I reamed the company out and told them that wasn't what I applied for. Cut up the card never used it and they sent me the correct one with the mastercard logo on it.

Today, that same department store credit card that was opened and closed in the same month and never used, is still on my report.

Question is, "Is this hurting or helping?" "Should I try to have them delete it?" "Should I leave it there showing I was approved for something?"

IMO probably not good, but if so, probably not too bad. I'd check to see if they hit you with a second hard inq. I personally would ask them to remove it since you did not apply for this card. Congrats on the Mastercard. Do you have other accounts on your credit report besides these 2 reporting?

Re: CC Companies Bait and Switch Scheme

Funny you ask that... lots of drama in my report... Never really paid too much attention to it, as I was always told by people, don't pay anything off, it will just hurt your score... And being young, I listened. Now I'm 25 and want more out of life than to think I "stuck it to the man" Smiley Happy

I only have 2 inquiries showing up. One for an auto loan, and one from Enterprise to rent a car. Don't really know if that constitutes a "Hard" pull or not, but those are the only ones showing.

I have a repo... now a judgement, 4 collections, one of which has already been verified as not mine.

Score really isn't that bad for all this going on. 582. And can only get better.

I have no open lines of credit for anything right now, no cell in my name, I own a house, but only on title... etc.

I'd ask them to remove the card you didn't order.  It may be hurting your score because it kills your average age of accounts, plus it counts as new credit obtained.

Re: CC Companies Bait and Switch Scheme

You say you own a house but only on title. I am guessing you bought it subject to or perhaps the loan is in a spouse's name. If you are absolutely positive that all the payments have been and will be made on time perhaps you can assume the loan or be added to the loan. Lenders love this 2nd option as then they have two people to come after. A paid on time mortgage might really help your score, but don't get stuck assuming a loan with a bad payment history and have that reported against you. It is possible that if it has a bad payment history they will only report your history after adding you on but it needs careful checking -get a WRITTEN answer from the lender on how they would report before doing this.
