CO Status is different, should it be???

Trying to help a family member clean their file, and they've got 5 CO's on their report.

Their all PIF, closed, and 3-4 years old.
Status all show "Paid after CO Current" all except for one.

Webbank/Fingerhut.

if anyone has experience with Fingerhut CO, could you chime in and lmk if this should have a status if "current" and not derogatory. Since all the others report as current, um confused on why Fingerhut won't provide that, if that's what it should show. Also, the PIF amount was paid to Jefferson Capital, who I assume is the CA. Unless Jefferson was just handled the collection and didn't actually own it.

Re: CO Status is different, should it be???

If they sold the debt prior to your ultimate payment to the new owner, their last reported status would remain delinquent (e.g., CO), and the balance updated at time of sale to show $0.  The creditor is not responsible for, and usually has no information regarding, the status of the debt after they have sold it, and does not update to paid.

Update to paid (or settled for less) is only required if the creditor still owns the debt at time of its payment, such as if you pay the debt collector, and the debt collector only has assigned collection authority, but does not own the debt.
