COLLECTIONS

I hope I can get some help with this question. My son has on his cr a collection from the child support office from back child support. He is paying this so thats not the question.

The question is: Can they legally have it on his credit report. The dofd was 2004. The child support office put it on his credit report Dec. 2010 and has date of dofd as Aug. 2010. They have been taking payments out of his check since dec.

What kind of proof would he need to prove this is wrong, if he could try to dispute it? Also, who would he dispute with?

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Re: COLLECTIONS

If he owes more than $1000 it will be put on the CR and stay there until it is paid.  Once the collection is paid it should come off.

What are you trying to dispute?

Re: COLLECTIONS

Just wondering if he should or could dispute the wrong dofd. I thought nothing (other than judgements) could be on cr after 7 yrs.

Re: COLLECTIONS

In arrears child support is handled a bit differently.  It can stay on your report until paid.

You should look up your states statutes on child support.

Once the debt is paid back, I believe the TL will be removed from the CR.
