Re: CONSUMER RIGHTS FOR NC RESIDENTS!

As far as I know, NC doesn't have a FCRA in their statutes. We do, however, have some pretty consumer-friendly debt collection laws. If you haven't found those yet, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.

FCRA is a Federal law, so it's not tailored to various states. But as ncblondie said, each state will have its own consumer protection laws. I'd go with her suggestions, plus check with the reference desk at your local public library, or call a near-by law school and ask if anyone there can point you in the right direction.

I also don't believe that NC has any rules similar to the Fair Credit Reporting Act. However, they have their own set of rules that accompany the FDCPA and sets of rules that govern collection agencies. One rule, for example, is they must put their permit number on all correspondence to you. If not, they can lose their biz license. Licensing info can be found here via their Dept of Insurance:

Also, here's the statute info on collection agencies:

It's a search tool. You can put in the term "collection agency" and try Chapter 58 to help limit the results.

I am also working on a list of links for each state for CA lookup if anyone is interested.
