Changing Social Security Number

Does anyone have any experience changing their social security number.  For the doubters, it is possible:

"The SSA may assign a new Social Security number to you if you are being harassed, abused, or are in grave danger when using the original number, or if you can prove that someone has stolen your number and is using it."

I'm planning to do this but not sure what unitended consequences might occur and would appreciate any tips.

Re: Changing Social Security Number

I found this very informative article. There are pros and cons to requesting a new SSN. Read the real case studies. I found those the most interesting.

Re: Changing Social Security Number

Interesting... Good article, In terms of credit reporting I wonder if it will link the history of the old number or if it will be a start from scratch credit building process.

It is not recommended unless an absolute last resort.

You cannot just ask them to connect the old info to the new number because it will trigger the old number's use.

That's not an issue because it's one way.  Those with the new number can see the old number, but those with the old compromised number can't see the new number.  Ideally, you do a name change first.

You are mistaken in this. Please check with the SSA.

Which part are you talking about?

Re: Changing Social Security Number

I have no experience in dealing with this, but I must say it is an interesting subject. It seems like something that can get messy, but I have no clue. I'm sure it is done though more than we think, with all of the stolen identities and crazy things that happen.
