ChexSystems dilema, please help!

Applied to join CCCU and they took my deposit. They called the next day to tell me I am declined due to ChexSystems report. I ordered it and discovered a Bank charge-off from Dec.2004.
Here is the story:
I banked with  particular bank since 1997 but went through some very difficult times at the end of 2004. I was overdrawn by $418 for over a month and they filed a charge-off. I was not aware they charged it off until I went in January 2005 to get my balance back in good standing. They told me it was a charge-off and I paid it on the spot 1/27/2005. They would not let me re-open a checking account.
I went back on 2/7/2005 to talk to the new branch manager and he gave me another shot. I opened a new account and have been in good standing ever since.
One problem on the ChexSystem report is that it shows the charge-off was paid 9/06/2006 but this was impossible because they only let me open the 2/7/2005 account after I paid the charge-off.
Should I write a GW letter to the bank asking to remove this item or should I dispute with ChexSystem because of the dating error.
Thank you all for your help.

Re: ChexSystems dilema, please help!

Dispute first so you still have a second option.

Unless the Chex entry shows your exact account number, I'd dispute it as 'not mine' if they have that option in chance the wrong account.

If it goes to GW, I'd throw in that it apparently has been reporting inaccurately for years looking more negative than the actual situation (which is a violation but don't get in their face about it unless they deny the nice lil GW).  Because of the inaccuracy though I wonder if they'd just delete the whole thing if you called the branch and spoke with a manager...

I also failed to mention that the bank has changed names as it was bought by another company. Do you think I would have more luck writing a GW first since it was the former bank that has made this error? Thanks for your input.

Re: ChexSystems dilema, please help!

Lolol now this is funny....Im going through the same thing with my bank. My bank (the one that dogs do with their tails), back when they were B1, had charged off an acct in Sept of 2004 due to me being in a real bad car accident and out of work for 4 months. Once I got back on my feet, and out of the hospital (2 months later) I paid it off in Nov of 2004. Tried to get a secured loan last month and was denied! A secured loan (money was in the bank). So I took my money out and went to a CU that I use to be a member of. Found out that my other bank had me in checxsystems. Called checxsystems and asked that it be removed....nada. Rep said it will stay for 5 years!

Im going to keep track of your post, as I hope you update it as soon as you get any results either way......Good luck to you!

Oh actually that would make me want to dispute first moreso in case they disposed of your records in the transition.

I may be wrong, but I 'think' CHEX is 5 years -  I can't get at my report right now to verify.

Re: ChexSystems dilema, please help!

Chex is indeed 5 years. But this item is the only thing keeping me from joining a CU. I will dispute and/or send a GW letter. Thanks for the input and I will keep you posted Jones.

As of today my name will be removed from chexsystems and i would just like to tell you that you have a better chance of digging to the equator with a scapel.  I tried and tried and tried with no success and thank God my 5 years is officially over yesterday with a brand new start today.  Sorry for the bad news but hey still dispute. It doesnt hurtSmiley Indifferent
