well this thread is a bit confusing well at least in my case anyways. im behind on child support through state of florida so on my credit report it comes up state of florida dept of renenue and under creditor reasons it says child support alamony. ive contacted the state about getting this off my record as im behind around 1000 and they said they wont do anything until im cought up 100% anyways the point in me posting this is when i applied for a chase freedom card i got the denial letter in the mail and they told me reason for denial was a recent negative on my report so i thought no way cause all the 4 that i have are around 4-5 years old so i called them and was told the reason is child support and that is affecting my score every month being its reported 120 days late

While the child support may indeed be reporting as 120 days, and Chase may very well have declined you citing the child support item and your score, BUT the score IS NOT counting the child support.  If Chase said otherwise then Chase is wrong.

ETA: Do you have any other negatives reporting? If so then it's likely that is what is hurting your score.

dont get me wrong i do plan on gettiing current with my child support but what would be the point in the state reporting child support and them sending me letters stating they will affect my credit if fico scoring doesnt take that into factor?

Just another thought.

It's good possibility that they could be using a VantageSCore and that VS considers child support.  I know that Chase does use VS for some of their business.

Re: Child Support

yes i do have negatives on my report about 4-5 years old all are medical related. ive been banking with chase for 3 years now so i went to my local branch to see if they had a secured cc and one of the reps there told me about the chase freedom stating "chase hands these out to everyone" so i applied then like i said got denied and called to do a recon and the rep told me that what they care about is recent baddies and the only thing recent is the child support and she also told me that the child support is what is hurting my score. im not too worried about the child support as i will be caught up within the next few months and now that i got my foot in the door with navy federal it will soon be bye bye with chase

Re: Child Support

Just as a caveat, many of these people don't really know a darn thing about credit. Your scores don't meet their requirements and they tell you what they think caused the score to be so low, meanwhile being 200% wrong!!

Re: Child Support

It's also a well discussed fact in these forums that credit score is not the sole determining factor in any creditors decision to extend or not extend credit.

Although FICO does not count the child support as a negative in assessing your SCORE, that does not mean that the individual creditor will not count the presence of the negative information in reaching a credit decision.

Did you notice a large negative variation in your FICO score when the child support reported? (Assuming you buy FICO reports on a regular basis as many of us do.)

BTW, sorry about your denial, but as you said there are other credit fish in the sea.

Re: Child Support

I don't know what my Fico score is cause I haven't had active credit for 6 months yet. I didn't even know they were reporting it until I made the decision to build my credit and pull my reports

Re: Child Support

Hi, I hate to mention to others here, the child support does matter, depending how they report the debt.  I have been fighting with DFJS because they have reported my child support as a collection without any recent payment history and I have never been late.  I have arrearages from the beginning of the court date till it was actually settled.  When it was settled they slapped it on my credit report as a collection.  I agreed to pay 100 extra a month and have been for 3 years, they refuse to log any payment history.  I was also declined by chase and all my fico scores are over 650.  I have taken a loan this week to pay that collection account and it will be marked on my credit report as paid "satisfied"  so I am hoping to see a bump from that.  ALSO every time I disputed this collection it dropped me 30 points. :-/ I am confused about that.  Hopefully when I pay it off I will NOT lose any points.
